G-L-A-M, Gloss Angeles.

Okay, so I saw a friend of mine, Sara Wright-Killinger, if she's listening, hello. And she brought me a little gift, and it was this book, Revlon, Art of Beauty.

Kirbie Johnson (0:27)

Cool.

Sara Tan (0:28)

A workbook that shows you how to do your best. It is like a guide to how to do your skincare and your makeup, and it is from, take a wild guess, the year.

Kirbie Johnson (0:39)

1982

Sara Tan (0:44)

What?

Kirbie Johnson (0:45)

You nailed it! Yay!

Sara Tan (0:46)

How did you know that? That's crazy.

Kirbie Johnson (0:50)

And I did not know anything about this book prior to Sara pulling it out.

Sara Tan (0:53)

So she got it from, you know how some neighborhoods have like little free free book libraries or whatever. So she had one in her neighborhood and she was like, I feel like Sara would want this. And so she grabbed it for me. And it is just full of so many gems.

I'm going to read you some of-

Kirbie Johnson (1:09)

I see some bookmarks. Yes.

Sara Tan (1:11)

I bookmarked some things to review. Okay.

Kirbie Johnson (1:13)

Intellectual.

Sara Tan (1:14)

I felt like I was back in college. It was kind of fun.

Kirbie Johnson (1:16)

Fun.

Sara Tan (1:17)

Yeah. With all this talk of AI, I was like, let me bust out my bookmarks.

Kirbie Johnson (1:21)

A real book.

Sara Tan (1:22)

A real book. And it made me think like this book couldn't be made today, sadly.

Because beauty trends are so fleeting. Though I will say a lot of the foundation of makeup and skincare and hair, everything, it's like, we know this and nothing has changed. But at the same time, I'm like, the things that people are learning from this book are now on TikTok. That's how people are learning.

Kirbie Johnson (1:48)

Even this face makeup on the cover is outdated. People are not wearing makeup like that.

Sara Tan (1:55)

So here are the five pointers for everyone in terms of how you should take care of your skin, Kirbie.

Kirbie Johnson (2:02)

According to Revlon in 1982

Sara Tan (2:03)

According to Revlon in 1982, drink six to eight full glasses of water a day, eat with beauty in mind, fresh fruits and vegetables, fewer fats and fried foods, exercise every day to keep fit, use fabric softener on face cloths for gentle cleansing care, moisturize under eye skin more often, use moisturizer during airplane travel to counteract in-flight dryness, use sunscreen, try to get seven hours of sleep, devote one evening a week to a total beauty ritual, facial sauna and facial mask, hair conditioning, manicure and pedicure. So that's the Bible.

Kirbie Johnson (2:41)

Okay. So a lot remains the same.

Sara Tan (2:44)

A lot remains the same.

Kirbie Johnson (2:45)

The one thing I would argue that has changed is the fabric softener.

Sara Tan (2:49)

Yes. Now we don't like to use fabric softener.

Kirbie Johnson (2:51)

I don't use fabric softener. I haven't used fabric softener maybe in decades because when I was a teenager, when I was breaking out, one of the first things my mom did was convert all of our laundry detergent and fabric softener to fragrance free, all of that stuff. And to this day, I still use all free and clear.

Sara Tan (3:12)

Totally.

Kirbie Johnson (3:12)

I don't use anything that has any type of fragrance in it on my bedsheets, my clothes because of that.

Sara Tan (3:18)

Right. Same. It's just so funny that that was like... That was important.

Kirbie Johnson (3:23)

It's like the washcloths are so gritty.

Sara Tan (3:25)

So hard. Too harsh.

Kirbie Johnson (3:27)

I mean, Kris Jenner can speak to that. She loves washcloths to remove her makeup. It's giving a little exfoliation, so they were definitely on to something there.

Sara Tan (3:34)

I wonder if Kris uses fabric softener and if so, which kind?

Kirbie Johnson (3:38)

Okay.

Sara Tan (3:39)

So I also highlighted basics about blushers. So this is a whole thing on blush, and it's talking about contour, which I feel like even though a lot of people think that contour is new and trendy, as we know, nothing is new in makeup and techniques. And so this whole section is about contouring, using two tones of the same color, one light, one darker, apply deeper shade under your cheekbone and the hollow area and the lighter shave above it so that they're side by side. And then it's talking about contouring with texture, using a matte blush and a lighter frosted blusher.

Very interesting techniques.
