For nearly two decades, Cheryl Burke's job required transforming into the ultimate ballroom fantasy, spray tanned, rhinestone, contoured, lashed and lit for television. As a two-time Mirrorball champion and one of the longest running professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars, she spent 26 seasons being judged, not only for how she danced, but for how she looked doing it. Now, Cheryl is figuring out what beauty looks like when it's no longer part of the costume. We talk about the wildly extensive Dancing with the Stars beauty routine, self-tanning versus spray tanning, her relationship with her Filipino identity, and why she loves being a part of the Sephora Squad.

Cheryl Burke, welcome to Gloss Angeles.
Cheryl Burke (0:51)
Thanks for having me. I love you girls. I listen to you guys all the time.
Kirbie Johnson (0:54)
You look so beautiful.
Cheryl Burke (0:56)
So gorgeous.
Sara Tan (0:56)
This hair. Did you do this yourself?
Cheryl Burke (0:58)
I did. The whole thing. Makeup, hair. I mean, this is unusual for me.
Kirbie Johnson (1:03)
No.
Sara Tan (1:03)
That is why she's on the Sephora Squad. The Squad taught me this.
Kirbie Johnson (1:07)
I mean, I think also years of being on television.
Sara Tan (1:10)
Maybe that.
Cheryl Burke (1:11)
Yeah. Honestly, I've been loving YouTube, like long form lately, and I have just been watching, I would say hundreds and hours of just tutorials. I'm just like really into learning lately, especially at just makeup application, just like a new way of applying it. Like I can put stage makeup on in two seconds, right? But it's like really trying to enhance instead of, you know, hide. Yeah. 100%.
Kirbie Johnson (1:36)
Love that. What are you using on your hair?
Cheryl Burke (1:39)
Oh my God. Well, first of all, half of this is extensions.
Kirbie Johnson (1:42)
Love.
Cheryl Burke (1:43)
Same. Yeah. I was gonna say, welcome. Relatable.
Sara Tan (1:46)
Well, yeah, I did. And then I cut it, but I'll come back. I'll come back to it.
Cheryl Burke (1:51)
What is this? So I, well, I washed it two days ago. So then what do I use? I use, oh, Rose.
I love their products. And then I use Gisu, the leave-in mask. I don't even use the Rose conditioner because I just find it, it doesn't really condition. But my hair has been, or maybe not this set of extensions, but in general has been through the wringer when it comes to just hot tools and everything. But I've been using this shark that's not supposed to be like actual heat. It's supposed to, this newer shark that just came out, is supposed to be like not bad for your hair.
Kirbie Johnson (2:23)
Is it a version of the flex style?
Cheryl Burke (2:25)
I think so. And it's really actually more, I have every Dyson you can possibly think of. And I have to say that this actually wraps your hair and it does so quickly. Yeah.
Sara Tan (2:35)
And like very strong, right?
Cheryl Burke (2:37)
So strong. Yeah. It's so loud, but so strong.
Kirbie Johnson (2:39)
I'm really curious what you're going to think about it though in a few months.
Cheryl Burke (2:42)
Why?
Kirbie Johnson (2:43)
Because Sara and I have had a meeting of the minds about this because we love both Dyson and shark. And we love shark because it really does hold that curl and does the wrap really well. And we feel like the hair dryer is more powerful.
But then we noticed your hair was a little less sleek than it used to be when we were using the Dyson.
Sara Tan (3:02)
Like shiny? We just feel like the heat may, or this whatever technology is maybe damaging our hair quicker than maybe like the Dyson.
No, I find the opposite.
Cheryl Burke (3:15)
Did you use this newer shark?
Sara Tan (3:18)
But maybe.
Kirbie Johnson (3:18)
The ion flex?
Kirbie Johnson (3:19)
Yes, there's a million of them. There's like a million of them.
Sara Tan (3:23)
Maybe we don't have the most updated version.
Kirbie Johnson (3:26)
No, but.
Kirbie Johnson (3:26)
The purple one?
Cheryl Burke (3:27)
You don't have the purple one.
Sara Tan (3:28)
I don't have the purple one.
Kirbie Johnson (3:29)
That's the one that we got when we saw Chris Appleton.
Sara Tan (3:31)
Oh, okay. See, I haven't used it.
Cheryl Burke (3:34)
Everyone listening, we understand this is an embarrassment of riches. I was supposed to teach Chris Appleton how to dance, but we never got to it because he's doing Strictly Come Dancing right now.
