We kick things off with Volvo Trucks aggressively pushing into a segment where it has long been an afterthought. Volvo Trucks North America wants to capture 15% of the North American heavy truck market, and President Peter Voorhoeve says that ambitious goal absolutely depends on cracking the vocational truck segment, where Volvo currently holds just 2% to 3% market share. The Swedish manufacturer just unveiled the VNX, the third truck on a massive shared platform that's part of a more than $2 billion new product investment program, or $3 billion when manufacturing is included. Vocational trucks represent roughly 25% to 30% of the North American market, and Voorhoeve is betting that Volvo's global construction truck expertise, combined with stronger demand driven by data center construction and infrastructure spending will finally push the brand into double-digit territory. Volvo's North American heavy-duty market share stood at 8.4% in 2025, down from 9% in 2024

Meanwhile, a bitter legal battle is exposing the cutthroat world of freight brokerage employee departures. Chicago-based Edge Logistics has filed a sprawling 51-page federal lawsuit against its rival broker FreightTech Management Group and four former employees, alleging the workers orchestrated a scheme to systematically divert customers using confidential information and kickbacks funded by inflated freight charges. According to the complaint filed in the US. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Edge's expedited freight division cratered 66.4% within weeks of the employees' departures in May 2026, while the rest of its business grew 8.5%.

Edge alleges the employees secretly established competing limited-liability companies in April, while still on Edge's payroll, arranged to transfer customer accounts to Utah-based Freight Tech, and even set up customer-specific Freight Tech email accounts before they resigned. The four former employees and three related LLCs have until December 1st to respond, and an initial status hearing is scheduled for December 2nd in Chicago.

Finally, a proposed federal trucking safety rule is drawing sharp criticism from a major civil rights organization representing Sikh drivers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration received more than 2,200 comments on its proposed English language proficiency rule, which would codify current regulations and place non-compliant drivers out of service. The Sikh Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to defending the civil rights of Sikh Americans, including a large number of Sikh truck drivers, submitted comments expressing concern that the rule lacks clear criteria for roadside inspectors and could lead to discrimination under the guise of enforcement. The organization cited its own analysis of Fmcsa data showing that just 0.19 percent of roadside inspections between 2021 and 2025 involved a driver's inability to communicate in English. However, during this year's road check week, ELP violations became a top five reason for out-of-service orders, consisting of 9.1 percent of all OOS orders. Major trucking organizations like the American Trucking Associations broadly backed the rule but called for standardized assessment criteria to prevent subjective interpretation by enforcement officials.
