Folks, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Transformers, the Movie, I am very pleased and honored to introduce the man behind two of the most iconic songs in the film, famously known as Dare and The Touch. His name is Stan Bush, and he is here to talk about his career and his contributions to one of the greatest animated movies of all time.
Please welcome Stan to TalkTimeLive exclusive. Stan, how are you doing, my friend?
Stan Bush (1:52)
Wonderful. Thank you. Thanks for having me, man.
Dax Avery (1:55)
Oh, no, the pleasure is absolutely all mine, and any G1 fan that is, you know, watching or listening to this right now. You're in the West Coast right now. How is that over there?
Stan Bush (2:05)
It's nice. It's actually nice. It's supposed to get hot again this weekend, but right now it's great.
Dax Avery (2:11)
I'm not jealous at all. Not too much. We literally just got our heat back. It was, it just, you know, fall just came and it just slapped us in a face of reality that like summer's over. We went outside and it was like 50 degrees and windy and cold and we had a nor'eastern.
Stan Bush (2:26)
Oh, where are you?
Dax Avery (2:28)
I'm Philadelphia, East Coast.
Stan Bush (2:29)
Okay, yeah. Okay, great.
Dax Avery (2:30)
Yeah, so like anybody who I interview that's from the West Coast, I always need to, you know, live vicariously through you guys.
But we have a lot to talk about. This is basically a celebration of not only one of the all time favorite fandoms in our culture, but also your contributions to it. I am so excited for this. I mean, let's start with the origin of Stan Bush. What influenced you to become a singer and songwriter?
Stan Bush (3:01)
Probably like the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show. You probably heard this one before, but yeah, my mom came and got us and you got to see this. You know, we were, I was like, what, 10 or 11, something like that.
And I went in there and was like, wow, just I can't explain it. It was just magical thing and just, I think everybody felt the same way and it was amazing. And but yeah, the Beatles were a huge influence in the beginning. And after that, it was, I don't know, I always loved all kinds of music. It was, Motown was always great, great songs, great singing. And just on and on. I mean, they were my favorite bands. In the early days were Zeppelin and other stuff. And then later bands like Foreigner and stuff and Journey. I think my, the 70s were a big part of, the 70s were like great because it was like all over the place. You'd hear, you'd hear like Bridge Over Trouble Water, and then there'd be Hendrix or something like that, you know?
Dax Avery (4:09)
Right. So, the A-Track era. I was, I was, you know, I was a part in an era to some extent.
You know, it's funny what I loved about the 70s and the 80s, and even the 90s to that respect, but more of the 70s and the 80s is that in radio stations, if you remember, we, they played everything. It wasn't like separated or segregated to each genre. It was like in the 80s, when I grew up, I was born in 77, I came in like in the 80s. So like radio was playing rock, it was playing country, it was playing rock, like, you know, pop, Duran Duran, and Culture Club and stuff like that. And it was playing Madonna and it was playing Wham and eat and didn't run DMC and LL Cole J and all this stuff, all in one and then Kenny Rogers. And like, so we got the entire recipe of everything back then. And then all of a sudden, the 90s came and everything just started migrating. And I wish we were back at that time. I love that because this is why Dolly Parton has been so iconic and Kenny Rogers and Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald and at the same time, run DMC's and Slick Rick's and all those guys. It was all in one pot and we all got to enjoy it all together. And then for some reason, somebody in the industry just said like, no, we can do all just one each.
