Hi gang, yesterday we had a lot of fun. A lot of fun. Today is the 16th of July, it's Thursday. Yesterday on Wednesday, in anticipation of watching Argentina and England and reading all the hype about how this is the greatest sports rivalry on the planet, I thought, well, let's have a poll question and ask that.
What's not so funny is what came in at the bottom of my ranking. In other words, I gave you a dozen different choices among them, Argentina and England, that came in with just 5% of the vote. There were a dozen choices and polling the fewest votes was the High Lafayette, 1.15% of nearly 26,000 voters. So what led the pack? Yankees and Red Sox, Army, Navy, this is the order, in descending order, Yankees, Red Sox, Army, Navy, Ohio State, Michigan, Ali Frazier, England, Argentina, Celtics, Lakers, Duke and North Carolina, Real Madrid and Barcelona, India, Pakistan, at just 1.71% of the vote. That's a cricket reference. People in the know say that ought to be regarded as the world's greatest sports rivalry. Harvard, Yale, Palmer and Nicholas, Lehigh and Lafayette. Lot of fun. What wasn't fun was watching Argentina and England at the end, if you were rooting for England as I was. But I gotta say, I have the same feeling. I wanted France to defeat Spain. I wanted England to defeat Argentina. I wanted to see a final that would have been Harry Kane and Mbappe and company. I wanted to see the battle for Europe, France and England. Well, I guess I'll get it, but that'll be in the race for third place, which will take place in Miami on Saturday at 5
But I have to say, with regard to each of these matches, and I'm a newbie, you know, still learning, but really, really enjoying the World Cup, the better team won in each instance. France was thoroughly outplayed by Spain and England, although they, you know, they were up one nil with not to, what, in the 55th minute, I think? Like, let me say it this way, two-thirds of the way through the match, they were leading one nil, but Argentina just couldn't be denied. Surgical is the word that I would use. They just picked apart England. England was much too much on the defense, and they were backing up and backing up and backing up. My God, if it had gone on for another 10 minutes, they'd have been in the net.
And Messi was brilliant. Messi was brilliant. And reminds me of Alan Iverson in that, you know, he's far from the biggest guy on the quarter, the pitch, but wow, does he have a skill set. It was exciting to watch. Exciting to watch, but disappointing if you were for England. But Spain and Argentina will be great on Sunday. Spain and Argentina will be great on Sunday.
