My guest tonight serves as executive chair and CEO of TKO and executive chairman of WME Group. His new memoir is called Roll the Calls. Please welcome to the program Ari Emanuel. Ari!
Ari Emanuel (1:36)
Thank you for having me.
Jon Stewart (1:38)
Ari, you are, by, as way of disclosure, I work for you, you are my agent, sort of.
Ari Emanuel (1:47)
I think that's a role reversal.
Jon Stewart (1:48)
I work for you, Jon. I work for you, Jon.
This is the longest I've ever talked to you.
Ari Emanuel (1:57)
A lot of people can say that.
Jon Stewart (1:59)
Very true. You're a powerful man. And you're a legendary agent. You're very interesting. But I don't know if you're this interesting.
Ari, this is 417 417 f***ing pages.
Ari Emanuel (2:16)
Did you count how many F's there were?
Jon Stewart (2:18)
There's a tremendous amount. You should have called the book F*** Me, No F*** You. It's 400 pages. I had to read this.
Ari Emanuel (2:29)
Yeah. We could have waited until Bob Odenkirk did the audio.
Jon Stewart (2:34)
Bob Odenkirk did the audio?
Ari Emanuel (2:36)
Yeah.
Jon Stewart (2:36)
How did you get him?
Ari Emanuel (2:38)
Well, it goes way back. I was Bob's agent when Mr. Show happened.
Jon Stewart (2:43)
Oh, God, on HBO, what a great show that was.
Ari Emanuel (2:44)
And Bob's still a friend. Called him up. He said, I'm going to read it anyway. Why don't I just read it and make some money? I said, great.
I thought I did my... I did my best ancient thing there.
Jon Stewart (2:57)
How much do you, as his agent, pay him to do your project?
Ari Emanuel (3:06)
So much. So much.
SPEAKER_1 (3:08)
I see.
Jon Stewart (3:09)
And is this... What is the impetus of writing the book, if I may, because there's a lot of other people in the industry that you've worked with that receive, if I may, less than stellar treatment in the book, but you're still alive and so are they.
SPEAKER_1 (3:28)
Yeah.
Jon Stewart (3:29)
Why?
Ari Emanuel (3:31)
Should I be serious for two seconds?
Jon Stewart (3:33)
No.
Ari Emanuel (3:33)
Okay.
Jon Stewart (3:34)
Yes.
SPEAKER_3 (3:35)
Be serious for two seconds.
Ari Emanuel (3:36)
Listen, I know this is going to shock you, but most of the time, I'm talking for other people when I represent them. This is the first time I'm talking in my voice. The main reason is I'm dyslexic, ADHD. A lot of parents have come up to me and asked me about that.
This is their Thomas guide, which we used to drive in LA to map, to say if you help your kids, one, get endurance and go through dyslexia and let them struggle as hard as it is for a kid, they can turn out okay, and here's the ways that they can turn out okay. The great thing about dyslexia is you're not linear thinker. You're, in my opinion, you become a free thinker because you're not attached to the words, you're attached to other things.
Jon Stewart (4:20)
So this is about, given the setback that you may have had with dyslexia, the fact that you can fight through it.
Ari Emanuel (4:27)
And then it's also for kids, a road back.
Jon Stewart (4:30)
This is not for kids. This is maybe the least, like, this ain't Miss Rachel. Let's put it that way.
Ari Emanuel (4:38)
Here's what I would say to you, a lot of people starting out in the business.
