Coming up today on Mini Scroll, Dixie D'Amelio speaks out on Charli, Taylor Frankie Paul to exit Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and Alo Yoga is allegedly striking down creator accounts. Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll. The Daily Internet Culture Podcast bring you the biggest stories from social media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian youth digital media brand, Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone and thank you so much to today's sponsor, The Commons, Australia's premium co-working space. The Commons is truly a main character in the Centennial World cinematic universe as the Chip and Dale location in Sydney has been our home for over five years, and it's where we record this podcast every single day. Whether you're a creative escaping the home office or a business owner looking to scale, the Commons offers beautifully designed spaces and a genuine sense of community across Sydney and Melbourne. While the spaces are stunning, it's the team that really makes the difference. Their support for growing businesses has enabled Centennial World success and sometimes survival over the years. If you're looking for a co-working space that feels considered, is community-led and actually backs people working there, head to thecommons.com.au. All right, everyone, welcome back. I actually did want to address a question that we got to our podcast TikTok account, Mini Scroll Podcast. Go follow us, please. We're close to 40,000 followers over there. We got a message over the weekend from one of you amazing listeners who found us through the TikTok account asking about the programmatic ads that run for them.
I wanted to explain just super quickly how podcast advertising works because I guess this listener was getting a lot of ads for Anthropic and some of the ads were those AI ads about how AI doesn't actually use a lot of water. And she was like, do you support this? I'm confused why all of your ads are for Anthropic. And I was like, oh my god, no.
We do not choose those ads. So basically, if you don't hear an ad that's in one of the host voices, then that's a programmatic ad. And those ads are inserted and decided on by the hosting platform. So it's the same as if you're watching a YouTube video and a commercial pops up at the beginning or in the middle of the video. We kind of all understand in that case that no matter how neutral or problematic that ad is, that the creator doesn't have any control over what ad is running there. And it is largely the same for podcasts. Now, I did go into the back end after this, and I was like, I wonder if there's a way that I can turn off AI ads. Because I remember when I set us up on this new hosting platform, when we migrated, this was years ago, there were categories that I could tick where I said like, I don't want gambling, I don't want military, like different things. So I was like, oh, I wonder if I could update that for AI. And there's actually no AI and tech categories specifically that I could find, which I found very interesting. But I did find B2B, and I think that's probably where they would be categorizing AI. So I just turned off ads for B2B. So hopefully, there's no more AI ads for you guys. Ads are also regional. So if I listen back to Mini Scroll from, I don't know, yesterday, for example, the ads that I will hear because I'm based in Australia will be totally different than the ads that you guys hear in like the US. So that adds like another layer of blind spot for creators, because not only do we not get to choose the ads that go in our podcast, but also we might have no idea that some crazy problematic ad is running on our show in a different country, because we will actually never hear that ad ourselves being in whatever country we live in. So yes, that is kind of how it all works, but hopefully there will be no more confusing, problematic ads. I don't know.
