Gerard Gibert (1:02)
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to MidDays. SuperTalk Mississippi. I'm your host, Gerard Gibert, along with Will East in the Element Weld Studio, guiding you through the middle of your day with facts, fodder, and fine music. Morning there, Will.
Will East (1:18)
Fall has arrived.
Gerard Gibert (1:20)
Well, it has arrived, and some much-needed resurfacing occurring in the parking lot, had to park in the back 40 Wasn't sure I was going to make it here with the long walk, but now we appreciate it. Yeah, man, a little brisk this morning.
Certainly, it was a Saturday. It went from like hot and shorts Friday morning to overnight Friday. That dry cold front swept through the Magnolia state, and man, it whipped up the wind big time.
Will East (1:51)
This weekend was fantastic. I went out of town with my wife and baby to a Greek Fest in Mobile, Alabama. I figured it was a good weekend to get away and not watch college football because nothing would happen in college football.
And I could not have been more wrong. It was the greatest day in college football history. It was amazing.
But it was a beautiful day. Very cool. Still no rain. I don't know about your part of the state, but...
Gerard Gibert (2:29)
Yep, none.
Will East (2:30)
None.
Gerard Gibert (2:31)
Yeah. So we thought we would have some from the storm that swept through last weekend.
We didn't get any in this part of the state. Now, to some extent, on the eastern part of the state, I know the Columbus area, for example, Golden Triangle, they got a good dousing, but nothing here in central Mississippi. Much needed, by the way. It's been another situation where we got a whole bunch of rain earlier in the year, and certainly earlier in the summer, and now it is drought-like conditions. I believe there are warnings about burning.
Will East (3:06)
Burn ban everywhere.
Gerard Gibert (3:06)
Yeah, burn ban is right. So that's something to be concerned about for sure in the state of Mississippi. But no rain, but at least it is a bit cooler and comfortable.
A little breezy here in central Mississippi this morning. Yesterday, a totally delightful day. Yes, what a topsy-turvy weekend for college football. Man.
Will East (3:28)
And I didn't get to watch. Gerard, I didn't get to watch a second.
Gerard Gibert (3:34)
Oh, Lord.
Will East (3:34)
Not a millisecond of it. I had no service. I was in a, we went to the Greek Fest in Mobile, Alabama at the Greek church there.
And there was a billion people that showed up.
Gerard Gibert (3:47)
Okay.
Will East (3:48)
So no service. Of course, we were visiting with family and everything, so I didn't really have time. But then my battery died. I mean, it was just like going back to the Stone Age.
And as soon as I got power, my phone just exploded with people going, did you see this game? Did you see that game? Did you see that other game?
Marie Sanderson (4:05)
Amazing.
Gerard Gibert (4:06)
So is there a big Greek community in Mobile?
Marie Sanderson (4:10)
Yeah.
Will East (4:11)
Mobile is, the church is not huge. It's long established, though.
Marie Sanderson (4:16)
Okay.
Will East (4:17)
Any kind of port city, they seem to congregate there.
Marie Sanderson (4:22)
Yeah.
Will East (4:22)
I don't know what it is about it, but.
Gerard Gibert (4:24)
Okay. Yeah.
Will East (4:26)
My wife was baptized there, and so we like to go back to it. It's a beautiful church. I mean, it is absolutely gorgeous. But yeah, any kind of port city, that's where they tend to congregate.
Gerard Gibert (4:37)
Well, we have a fairly substantial Greek community here.
Marie Sanderson (4:41)
And places where restaurants are. Yeah.
Will East (4:43)
Every restaurant in this town seems like it was run by a Greek.
Gerard Gibert (4:46)
Especially downtown.
Will East (4:48)
Yeah.
Gerard Gibert (4:49)
Yeah. So one of my best friends, really my best friend growing up, at St. Mary's over there in West Jackson, also in Medicskill, lived in that area. His father was from Italy, and his mother, they were naturalized citizens. His mother from Greece, and was in the restaurant business. Had a little restaurant. Folks around the central Mississippi area may recall it.
