Gerard Gibert (1:01)
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to MidDays. SuperTalk Mississippi. I'm your host, Gerard Gibert, along with Will East. In for the vacationing, Rhino, we're in the Element Weld studio, where we'll be guiding you through the middle of your day with facts, fodder, and fine music. Morning there, Will.
Will East (1:22)
Good morning.
Gerard Gibert (1:23)
What's happening, man?
Will East (1:25)
Very busy weekend.
Gerard Gibert (1:26)
Yes, it was.
Will East (1:28)
For everybody, I think.
Gerard Gibert (1:29)
Man, that is so true. Of course, the big game in Oxford, in the state of Mississippi.
Congratulations to the Rebels and the Bulldogs as well for pulling it out against South Carolina. So, two big time SEC victories for the SEC schools in our state. I did attend the Ole Miss game. Got back about 3 a.m. Just the good news about having a parking spot that's pretty close to the stadium. As you can be a little less concerned about your time of arrival for the game, getting your spot and being there for kickoff. The bad news is, the closer you are to the stadium, the last you are to get out.
Will East (2:20)
Especially at a close game.
Gerard Gibert (2:22)
Wow.
Will East (2:22)
Because everybody stays.
Gerard Gibert (2:23)
Yes. And so we sat in the parking lot there for about two hours, watching the traffic not move in front of us. And so we finally got in the vehicle right after 12, about 12, 15, and got on home. So, man. But it was worth it. Lot of fun. I think it was everything. It was built to be. The good news is, I didn't really see or hear of any incidents, you know, any security.
Will East (2:52)
There were a couple of minor things, but overall, it was a great ad for the state of Mississippi.
Gerard Gibert (2:57)
Completely agree. I thought it was fantastic.
My daughter, you know, is the press secretary for the Department of Public Safety, and she was assigned to work the event, recording the DPS's involvement, of course. But the big thing, of course, was they wanted her to video and shoot still photos, photographs of the out-of-state law enforcement officers being sworn in in Mississippi to assist. But there was as many state troopers.
Will East (3:32)
So when they come over, they have to get sworn in?
Gerard Gibert (3:34)
Apparently so. I don't really understand all the rules around that. I haven't asked her, but, yeah. So if you're a sworn officer within a specific state, that only authorizes you, I guess, in that state. So if you are going to perform law enforcement duties in another state, certainly in Mississippi, I guess, according to our law, you gotta be sworn in to the state of Mississippi.
Will East (4:00)
So when the LSU head coach comes in, I'm not saying his name, I'm abstaining from it, comes in, he's got the Louisiana Highway Patrol, I'm guessing, or state police or something. They're uniformed.
Gerard Gibert (4:17)
Yeah.
Will East (4:18)
And they have to be sworn in?
Gerard Gibert (4:19)
I don't know about that. That's more executive protection, I think, and that may be a little different than just general public type activity. I'm not sure. I'm just passing on what I know.
SPEAKER_1 (4:34)
I apologize for that.
Gerard Gibert (4:36)
He was there. In fact, my daughter was on the field. She had a past, being in the press and being with DPS. And while she was on the field, I was up in the stadium. She sent a photo. She was about 20 feet away from the governor. This is pregame, of course. And he was on the field with his visor, his LSU visor.
Will East (4:53)
And he had a...
I saw him and he had a couple of security guards around him. And you could tell they weren't uniformed, but they were wearing purple fishing shirts. Yeah. But you could see the earpiece.
Gerard Gibert (5:06)
Yeah, exactly. You know they were security.
Will East (5:08)
Yeah. And they were all dressed the same.
Gerard Gibert (5:11)
Yeah.
Will East (5:11)
But they were kind of hovering around him.
Gerard Gibert (5:13)
Yeah. Well, it was quite the affair. No doubt about that. And I agree with you. I think it truly did showcase the state of Mississippi in a positive way. I'm not a big fan of the striped out that, you know how for every game, it's become customary. They tell you what color to wear.
