Devonte Lee (0:21)
Thanks for having me, Vlad.
DJ Vlad (0:23)
Well, first time here, I want to start in the very beginning. So you grew up in Compton?
Devonte Lee (0:29)
On the outskirts of Compton. My family, I have family in Compton.
DJ Vlad (0:32)
Okay. And your grandmother lives in Compton?
Devonte Lee (0:36)
Yes, she lived in the part of Compton.
DJ Vlad (0:38)
So you moved there at one point?
Devonte Lee (0:40)
Yeah, I was living there for a couple of years with my grandmother and then that's when we moved to the outskirts, you know, of Compton. But you know, I still had to come back to Compton because my grandmother lives there.
DJ Vlad (0:53)
Okay. And what was the gang situation like when you were a kid, like 11, 12 years old?
Devonte Lee (1:00)
Really, when I was 11 or 12, I really didn't engage in it too much back then. It was around me, but you know, I was more playing sports and things of that nature. So a lot of my time was tied up. Only time I would like to go to indoor gangs or anything is when I went to Compton and had to hang with the kids that's in the neighborhood. You know what I mean?
DJ Vlad (1:26)
Okay. So at what point did you meet Orlando Anderson?
Devonte Lee (1:29)
It was around 92, 93
DJ Vlad (1:32)
Okay. So you meet Orlando Anderson and he grew up in a Southside Crip family.
Devonte Lee (1:39)
Correct.
DJ Vlad (1:39)
Right. So his uncle was Keefe D and what about the other family members?
Devonte Lee (1:45)
Well, you know, he had other uncles. You know, aunties, things like that. They lived in the neighborhood.
DJ Vlad (1:50)
Okay. And were both of them gang related?
Devonte Lee (1:53)
No, no.
The girls were the women, you know what I mean? They worked hard every day. You know, the boys did dabble into the street life, of course, you know what I mean, growing up right there. But, yeah.
DJ Vlad (2:12)
Okay. So when did you meet Keefe D?
Devonte Lee (2:17)
Around the same, it was around the same time as, well, I have seen him already, but I'm talking about really was around, was like shortly after we got put on, me and Dre now, that's when we started really hanging on the block.
DJ Vlad (2:34)
Okay. So you're hanging around Orlando and around the SouthsideCrips, but you're not actually a member yet. And did it get to a point where they said you either got to join or stop hanging around?
Devonte Lee (2:46)
Yeah. They, the homies hollered at Baby Lane. And he was like the narrator, basically. So he came from around, you know, around the corner from where the homies was hanging. And they was on us at the time. The homies was on us. You know, because we was doing our own thing too. You know, hustling, hitting licks, you know, datings, regals, cutlass, you know, the gang banging stuff. But Lane had came, we used to kick it at one of our Hispanic partners' house. His name was Ben. And he used to cut low riders in his garage and stuff, you know. So we used to hang it out at his house every day.
Lane used to be there too. That was on Bennett. And we used to hang over there. So he came over to Ben's house. We were all there, being a few other homies.
And Lane told us, he said, homies trying to see what's up. Like, what y'all going to do, man?
Y'all riding with the South? Or y'all going, you know what I mean? Y'all got to get on. Like, do y'all own thing, you feel what I'm saying? So me and Freaky and a couple other of our homies, we, you know, looking at each other like, damn shit, dude, you want to get put on? What are we going to do? You know what I mean? Because it was, Big Dre was like, fuck it, we going to get put on. Like, fuck it, we going to get put on. He was like, all right. We going to walk around there, because it was around the corner. Walk around there. And on the way there, Lane said, don't trip, man, I'm going to make sure y'all get y'all fair issues. You know what I mean? You know? Yeah, one on one fight. Yeah, one on one fight.
