Hello and welcome, I'm Karan Rao, joined as always by Ayesha Mehta, and we've got a great one for you today.

Ayesha Mehta (0:05)

Hi, everyone. Today, we're looking at an AI deep fake that sparked a two-crore rupee lawsuit, a cultural clash that literally shut down the Eiffel Tower, and why Netflix is suddenly circling a cricket match in Japan.

Karan Rao (0:21)

It is Wednesday, September 9th, 2026 And we're gonna jump right into a pretty grim situation here in the capital, along with a major legal development.

Ayesha Mehta (0:31)

Yeah, this is a tough one.

Karan Rao (0:32)

It really is. So according to the Telegraph India, the Supreme Court has just agreed to intervene in the Satyaniketan building collapse.

Ayesha Mehta (0:39)

Right.

Karan Rao (0:40)

And if you've ever lived in student housing in Delhi, you know exactly how crammed these spaces can be. This was a five-story boy's PG accommodation near Delhi University's South Campus.

Ayesha Mehta (0:50)

And it collapsed on Sunday afternoon, right around 1.30.

Karan Rao (0:52)

Exactly, seven people died. The owner, Hariram Gupta, he was actually arrested out in Bihwadi and brought back to Delhi on a transit remand.

Ayesha Mehta (1:00)

Okay, so he's in custody.

Karan Rao (1:02)

Yeah, 14-day judicial custody now. And five MCD officials have also been suspended.

Ayesha Mehta (1:07)

Well, I mean, the human cost is just awful. But looking at the legal mechanics here, why exactly is the Supreme Court pulling this up right now?

Karan Rao (1:16)

That's the big question.

Ayesha Mehta (1:17)

Because the Delhi High Court is already handling a public interest litigation on this exact incident. So if local authorities are suspended and the High Court is already on it, why escalate to the highest court in the country?

Karan Rao (1:30)

That is precisely what the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued. He essentially asked the bench to just let the High Court do its job.

Ayesha Mehta (1:37)

Makes sense.

Karan Rao (1:38)

But the Supreme Court specifically, Justices Asanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan, they agreed with the amicus curiae Ajit Kumarsan here.

Ayesha Mehta (1:47)

And an amicus curiae is basically an independent expert advising the court.

Karan Rao (1:51)

Right, a friend of the court. And Sinha's core argument was that this is not some localized isolated failure anymore. It is a nationwide structural safety crisis.

Ayesha Mehta (2:01)

I mean, the warning signs were already there in that exact neighborhood.

Karan Rao (2:04)

Oh, absolutely. Sinha reminded the court that a very similar collapse happened in the exact same area back in April 2022 Yeah, he presented this status report showing that these PG accommodations, they operate in residential zones with completely unauthorized structural alterations.

Ayesha Mehta (2:21)

Right, they just keep building up.

Karan Rao (2:23)

Exactly. Just to give you an idea of the physical reality here, the Satya Niketan building squeezed a basement and four floors onto a tiny 55-square-yard plot.

Ayesha Mehta (2:34)

Wait, 55-square-yards? That is unbelievably small for five stories.

Karan Rao (2:39)

It's tiny. There are reports of active construction happening in that basement plus water logging right before it went down.

The Supreme Court actually pointed to a committee they set up just this past July to inspect unsafe buildings in places like Lajpat Nagar and Socket. So the real takeaway is that the oversight failures happening in this one neighborhood, well, they're basically a mirror for student accommodations all over the country.

Ayesha Mehta (3:02)

You know, it's wild. While India is clearly struggling with oversight on a local structural level, we are also seeing this incredible push to expand oversight on the global stage.

Karan Rao (3:12)

The pivot to international diplomacy.

Ayesha Mehta (3:15)

Exactly. Because the scale of what is happening in New Delhi this week is genuinely staggering.

So the Times of India reports that India is hosting the 2026 BRICS Summit.

Karan Rao (3:27)

Right. Over at the Parat Mundapam.

Ayesha Mehta (3:28)

Yeah. On September 12th and 13th. And we are talking about 11 formal member countries now. So Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, plus Ethiopia, the UAE, Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Karan Rao (3:42)

It's a massive list.

Ayesha Mehta (3:44)

It is. And on top of that, 10 partner nations are attending. I mean, the logistics alone are mind boggling.

Karan Rao (3:50)

It's a huge diplomatic undertaking. Under India's chair ship this year, they've held over 350 BRICS related meetings.

Ayesha Mehta (3:57)

Wow.

Karan Rao (3:58)

Yeah. Including 25 just at the ministerial level. The theme this year is billing for resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.

Ayesha Mehta (4:05)

Which really leans into Prime Minister Modi's humanity first approach.
