Imagine losing a high-stakes match to a team you, while you barely even knew, played the sport.

Ayesha Mehta (1:04)

Right?

Karan Rao (1:04)

That nightmare scenario almost became reality for India this week. Welcome to the Deep Dive.

Ayesha Mehta (1:10)

Hey there, Ayesha Mehta and Karan Rao here.

Karan Rao (1:12)

It is so great to be with you today.

Ayesha Mehta (1:14)

Today is Tuesday, September 22, 2026 And over the next few minutes, we're going to look into why 3.3 million voters just got slapped with this deeply confusing notice, that near historic cricket upset by Japan, and why your instinct to reach for a common painkiller might actually be quietly doing irreversible damage to your kidneys.

Karan Rao (1:36)

Yeah, IIT Bombay death investigation intensifies.

Ayesha Mehta (1:39)

Yeah, this one is just rough.

Karan Rao (1:40)

It really is. So according to the Times of India, the parents of a 19-year-old second-year B-Tech student, Sahil Wakod, they are demanding the immediate arrest of the Institute's director, Sharish B. Kadair, and a professor, Surya Narayana Dula.

Ayesha Mehta (1:53)

Following the discovery of his death, right? Exactly. This follows the tragic discovery of Sahil's death in his hostel room just a few days ago on September 18th.

And the core of the parents' allegation here is that their son endured like three months of severe caste-based abuse from this specific professor.

Karan Rao (2:14)

The details coming out are just, they're devastating, especially from a human perspective. Because Sahil's parents actually visited him in his dorm just days before his death. Oh, wow. Yeah.

And when he opened up about the harassment, his mother, Snali Wacod, she basically told him to focus on his education. She advised him to just tolerate it.

Ayesha Mehta (2:34)

Right, because of the opportunity.

Karan Rao (2:36)

Exactly, because he had this brilliant future ahead of him at one of the country's most prestigious institutes. And now, I mean, she is living with the bitter regret of giving him that advice.

Ayesha Mehta (2:45)

That is just...

Karan Rao (2:46)

It's a completely heartbreaking position for any parent to find themselves in.

Ayesha Mehta (2:49)

It truly is. And, you know, looking at how the institution is responding, it's kind of a classic example of a massive organization scrambling when they're faced with intense scrutiny.

Karan Rao (2:58)

Yeah, for sure.

Ayesha Mehta (2:59)

IIT Bombay has temporarily relieved Professor Dula of his administrative duties, though he does actually remain on the faculty.

Karan Rao (3:07)

Okay.

Ayesha Mehta (3:08)

But what's really notable here is that the Institute had to issue a public apology regarding their initial narrative.

Karan Rao (3:14)

Because of the cheating claim.

Ayesha Mehta (3:15)

Right. They had previously claimed that Sahil was caught using ChatGPT to cheat on an exam, a claim the family completely rejected.

The Institute has now acknowledged that the facts are subject to an ongoing police investigation, which is essentially walking back their initial defense.

Karan Rao (3:33)

Moving to our next story. Supreme Court questions Delhi voter notices.

Ayesha Mehta (3:37)

The logistics on this one are wild.

Karan Rao (3:39)

Seriously. So the Hindu is reporting that the Election Commission of India has sent notices to over 3.3 million voters in Delhi, citing, quote, logical discrepancies in their electoral records.

Ayesha Mehta (3:51)

Massive numbers.

Karan Rao (3:52)

Right. And the Supreme Court is now stepping in because they noted that these notices appear to be mechanically generated by a software system, without any human consideration of individual cases.

Ayesha Mehta (4:02)

Yeah, the math here is what makes this so staggering.

Delhi has a total of roughly 9.7 million voters. Out of that entire population, over 3.3 million got flagged.

Karan Rao (4:13)

That's a huge chunk.

Ayesha Mehta (4:14)

It is. But here is the critical data point the petitioners brought to the court. Of the voters who actually went through the tedious process to challenge this discrepancy, 91% were immediately restored to the electoral roll.
