Ever hit a wall in the middle of the day and a third coffee just doesn't do it anymore?

Here's what's actually happening. Coffee only briefly blocks adenosine, the chemical that tires you out. When it stops working, your system is flooded and you crash. Modafinil is a prescription treatment that works in a completely different way. Modafinil works by stimulating multiple receptors in the brain associated with wakefulness, including dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, histamine, glutamate and orexin. It's a more complete solution that gives you 10 to 12 hours of steady focus and energy.

SPEAKER_3 (1:25)

We're watching and monitoring it closely. I don't think it's cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus.

Georgia Howe (1:30)

The Supreme Court is back in session with some big cases on the docket. We run through the ones to watch.

Charles Stimson (1:50)

I think this is probably the biggest case of the term in terms of potential economic impact if it went the wrong way.

And Trump-aligned candidates surge in Brazil as South America continues its rightward drift.

Thanks for waking up with Morning Wire. Stay tuned with the news you need to know.

A devout Orthodox Jew invited about a dozen friends to pray in his home. His city required him to get a permit and then recruited his neighbors to spy on him. It may sound impossible, but it actually happened in University Heights, Ohio, to a man named Daniel Grand. That's why Alliance Defending Freedom and Oreck, Harrington and Sutcliffe are defending Daniel at the US Supreme Court. Alliance Defending Freedom never bills its clients and right now, your gift will be doubled by a matching grant while matching funds last. Hundreds have been quarantined or placed under medical observation amid concerns about a potential outbreak of the plague in Siberia. This comes after the death of a Russian laboratory worker last week that may have a possible connection to the deadly bacteria.

John Bickley (3:07)

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says that US officials are closely monitoring the developments surrounding the apparent lab leak. Joining us now with more is Tim Rice, our Washington DC Bureau Chief. Great to have you on.

Tim Rice (3:19)

Happy to be here.

John Bickley (3:21)

What more can you tell us about this potential outbreak?

Tim Rice (3:24)

Sure. As you guys mentioned, this all started sometime late last week or over the weekend when a 28-year-old lab tech named Daria Shipalova died. She checked herself into the hospital with symptoms of pneumonia. It apparently advanced very rapidly and now it's suspected that she's been in the course of her work at the Russian anti-plague research facility. It dropped a vial or in some way was exposed to a type of plague. Now, this is the type of plague that you're thinking of. It's the bubonic plague, the Black Death, the thing that killed tens of millions of people in the Middle Ages.

Now, based on early reports, and we should just take a moment right here to say that this is all moving very quickly. We're pulling together a lot of different things from Russian news sources and Russian individuals who are speaking out.

So obviously, we're not super sure about any of this, but early reports seem to suggest that this is not the bubonic plague, but the pneumonic plague, which is basically the same as the plague from the Middle Ages, except it's the only one of three varieties of plague that can be transmitted person to person. So definitely calls for alarm or concern, but not a full-blown COVID lab leak situation quite yet. We should note upfront that plague is treatable. It's treatable with antibiotics. We know how to treat it. The United States has about seven cases of plague per year, usually due to animal exposure somewhere in the Western United States. But so this is a known and treatable disease, if it is the type of plague that we think it is.
