Our Take: Raygun's doco, suburban slugs + Father's Day socks

The Briefing

September 4, 2026

Despite suffering through a week of technical failures, we're back for this weekend's instalment of Our Take - our looser, goosier look back at the week that was, and what you and we made of it all.  We kick off by debriefing the Raygun doco on Netflix.
Speakers: Chris Spyrou, Sacha Barbour Gatt, Angie

Topics: Daily News, News

Okay, now, this is where I come at you with high energies, saying welcome, welcome to Our Take, our Saturday episode, a looser chat, we kick off our ties, our shoes, that's not the right turn of phrase. But can I just say we have had a disastrous day of recording. We have been like thrown into the worst possible tech dramas, I would say in a very, very long time. Internet connection has been very bad. I have lost multiple guests this week on the line.
We've just resorted to doing a phone, an interview via telephone, which I don't like. I hate doing it over the phone and not via video call.
But this is our last official thing to do today, and it is recording Our Take. Sacha Barbour Gatt, welcome. Thank you. Okay, today, we're, it's the format is always the same. We start with a debriefing where we get into a story that we couldn't stop talking about this week. Then we open up our Inbox where we go through some of your DMs, comments and reactions from the week that was. We of course have the weekend list and our brand new weekend quiz where we find out who's been paying attention to the headlines. But first, let's start with this weekend's debrief, which is...

Give it up to Raygun!

**Chris Spyrou** (1:23)
Now, let me tell you, my Wednesday night was so joyful because I watched the Raygun documentary on Netflix.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (1:32)
Yeah, so it dropped on Tuesday, I think. I did try and get Raygun on the pod. We were politely, or they politely declined.

**Chris Spyrou** (1:40)
Yeah, they've been declining us since 2024

**SPEAKER_5** (1:43)
Yeah, we've been trying courageous.

**Chris Spyrou** (1:45)
We have, the Netflix doco is called Untold Raygun, Breaking Badly. And the synopsis is, From Australian academic to global meme breakdancer, Raygun recounts her offbeat path to the Olympic stage and the infamy that followed.
Let me tell you, I got to relive everything that was Raygun and that journey. And I'd forgotten most of it, to be honest with you. But getting to relive it in Netflix form. And you know, I'm a sucker for a good doco. I love a beautifully shot doco. And this was a beautifully shot doco. Beautifully edited.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (2:15)
I've watched the trailer, looked lovely. I do intend to watch it, haven't yet though.

**Chris Spyrou** (2:18)
The sound design, stunning. The inclusion of interviews I very much enjoyed because as much as it was Raygun talking, like we saw, we had, okay, context. Let's do a little radio reset. For those not in the know, Raygun is Australia's top, she was marketed to us as Australia's top B girl, top break dancing girl, that we sent to the Paris Olympics. And that was the first and only time the Olympics introduced and had break dancing a part of it. She went, she danced three times, she competed three times. She got zero points or votes in her favour.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (2:53)
And she went viral for her dance moves.

**Chris Spyrou** (2:55)
She went viral for her dance moves.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (2:56)
And it wasn't only like, initially, I think it was all in a bit of fun, but then the conspiracies started, there was some real nastiness around the commentary of what she did. And yeah, she turned into an absolute sensation.

**Chris Spyrou** (3:10)
Yeah, she did. She was like, Adele shouted her out in the concert. She was parodied on one of the Jimmy's, either Fallon. I think it was Fallon or Kim.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (3:19)
All the late night shows talked about her.

**SPEAKER_5** (3:20)
Everyone talked about her. She was everywhere.

**Chris Spyrou** (3:21)
She was everywhere. And she kind of like, for a moment, I want to say she leant in, but then watching the documentary, I'm kind of like, oh, she wasn't leaning in. She was trying to take control of the narrative.
Yeah. And that kind of made things worse for her at the time. Anyway, two years later, we've got this doco and the inclusions, like I was saying, features herself, her husband who took on her coaching, her actual head coach that was appointed by Australian Olympic Breaking. We heard from her parents. We also heard from B Girls that she had competed against, who were not happy with what she did at the Olympics.

**Sacha Barbour Gatt** (3:59)
I think we need to probably put a spoiler on this because there are some revelations, right? Now, I haven't seen it, but I'm going to let you reveal them to me. So what do you think were the biggest takeaways that we should sit up and take notice of? From the doco.
