Hey there, Ayesha Mehta and Karan Rao here.

Karan Rao (0:32)

It is great to be back with you. Diving into what is making news around the world right now.

Ayesha Mehta (0:38)

Today is Monday, October 5th, 2026 And today we're looking at a massive 130 million name mystery on the voter rolls, a temporary police promotion that is raising some very serious eyebrows, and how scientists are literally using light as a molecular switch in the human brain.

Karan Rao (0:55)

Yep, we have taken a giant stack of today's news sources, ranging from international agreements to cutting edge science.

And our mission is really just to unpack the facts behind the headlines, one by one. So you are fully caught up on how and why these things are actually happening.

Ayesha Mehta (1:08)

And let's get right into it.

Karan Rao (1:10)

Supreme Court seeks answers on voter roll revisions. Oh, wow.

Ayesha Mehta (1:14)

Okay.

Karan Rao (1:14)

Yeah. According to The Guardian, India's Supreme Court has issued notices to the Modi government, the Election Commission, and its chief Ganesh Kumar. The court is basically demanding accountability over a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls.

Ayesha Mehta (1:27)

Right. And this revision has triggered some massive protests, hasn't it?

Karan Rao (1:31)

It really has. And to understand why people are protesting, we have to look at the sheer mechanics of what's happening. The scale here is, well, it's difficult to wrap your head around. Reports indicate that 130 million names have been removed from the voter rolls during this intensive revision.

Ayesha Mehta (1:48)

Wait, 130 million?

Karan Rao (1:50)

I just have to pause on that number for a second.

Ayesha Mehta (1:53)

It's a staggering figure. Imagine waking up on election day, heading to the polls, and finding out that a population roughly the size of Japan has just vanished from the system. I mean, it is no wonder we are seeing massive demonstrations from opposition parties, student groups, and this newly prominent youth-led cockroach movement.

Karan Rao (2:12)

Well, the Election Commission has defended the mechanics of the exercise. Their stated defense is that this is simply an administrative cleaning process.

They argue they are sweeping the roles to remove dead voters, duplicate entries, ineligible names, and what they term illegal infiltrators.

Ayesha Mehta (2:30)

Sure, but the way those sweeps are actually executed on the ground is why this matters to you if you are following the democratic process. Large numbers of people in places like Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal are coming forward saying they are legitimate citizens who were wrongly stripped of their voting rights.

Karan Rao (2:46)

Right, the on-the-ground impact.

Ayesha Mehta (2:47)

Exactly, and you have minority groups, particularly Muslims, explicitly alleging that this process is not random but that they are being specifically targeted.

Karan Rao (2:55)

And those allegations have now reached the highest court. Lawyer Menaka Guruswami actually told the Supreme Court that because of these mass deletions, free and fair elections are no longer the case.

Ayesha Mehta (3:05)

Wow.

Karan Rao (3:06)

Another advocate warned the bench that without judicial action to ensure fairness, the country will burn.

The Supreme Court is taking this very seriously, and has demanded a transparent response. A further hearing is set for next week.

Ayesha Mehta (3:20)

Moving to our next story, Election Commission rejects Rahul Gandhi Form 6 claims.

Karan Rao (3:25)

NDTV is reporting that the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is alleging that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, unilaterally and illegally changed something called Form 6

Ayesha Mehta (3:36)

And the Election Commission immediately pushed back on this, didn't they?

Karan Rao (3:39)

They did, yeah. They called the claims misleading, and stated that the launch of this revision was unanimously approved and actually upheld by the Supreme Court back in May 2026

Ayesha Mehta (3:50)

So let's explain what Form 6 actually is, because it sounds like dry bureaucratic paperwork, but it's the gateway to voting. If you are a citizen applying to be included in the electoral rolls for the first time, you fill out Form 6

Karan Rao (4:01)

Right.

Ayesha Mehta (4:02)

The technical core of this dispute is a brand new checkbox, a new declaration added to the online version of this form.
