Hey there, Ayesha Mehta and Karan Rao here. It is Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Karan Rao (0:55)

Welcome to the Deep Dive.

Ayesha Mehta (0:57)

Today we're digging into a trade deal that involves Venezuelan crude, how an Instagram fan page inadvertently helped target a Bollywood star, and a massive IPO fueled by satellites.

Karan Rao (1:07)

Right, and we know you're constantly bombarded with alerts and disjointed headlines, so our purpose today is to take your stack of sources, extract the vital facts, and figure out what it all actually means without getting overwhelmed.

Ayesha Mehta (1:20)

Let's get right into it. India-U.S. trade deal nears completion.

Karan Rao (1:25)

Okay, so what's the latest here?

Ayesha Mehta (1:26)

Well, according to Telegraph India, US. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and S. Jai Shankar met in Mumbai today. And the major headline is that a bilateral trade pact is nearly complete.

Karan Rao (1:37)

Oh, wow.

Ayesha Mehta (1:38)

Yeah. Rubio indicated there are only a tiny handful of issues left before they officially sign it.

But to really grasp why this is moving so fast right now, we have to look at the global backdrop.

Karan Rao (1:49)

Right, the Middle East.

Ayesha Mehta (1:50)

Exactly.

You've got Iran actively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, which is a massive bottleneck that sees about 20% of the world's petroleum flow through it. And you have Houthi strikes hitting critical Saudi infrastructure, specifically the East-West oil pipeline. I want to push on that energy angle for a second, though, because looking at the details from the meeting, there is a fascinating contradiction here.

Karan Rao (2:13)

How so?

Ayesha Mehta (2:13)

Well, the US is actively advocating for India to purchase more American technologies and defense systems. We expect that.

But at the exact same time, Rubio literally referred to India as a refining superpower.

Karan Rao (2:26)

Right.

Ayesha Mehta (2:27)

And he's actively discussing the potential for India to process Venezuelan crude oil. Why is the US pointing India towards South America?

Karan Rao (2:35)

It really comes down to the mechanics of global energy sanctions. I mean, the US wants India to drastically diversify its energy sources away from Russian oil.

Ayesha Mehta (2:43)

Sure.

Karan Rao (2:43)

But you can't just tell a country of over a billion people to stop buying cheap energy without offering a viable alternative.

Ayesha Mehta (2:49)

So Venezuela is the workaround.

Karan Rao (2:51)

Yeah. Since Indian energy companies already hold concessions in Venezuela, the US sees that as a strategic release valve. They can ease the global supply crunch without relying on Moscow.

Ayesha Mehta (3:02)

But what does this mean for the broader strategic alignment? Because there is still serious ongoing friction between the two countries.

Karan Rao (3:08)

Oh, definitely.

Ayesha Mehta (3:09)

You have massive H1B visa fee increases and severe green card processing restrictions that are actively hurting Indian IT firms right now.

Karan Rao (3:16)

Yeah, it's a huge issue.

Ayesha Mehta (3:17)

So how do you sign a massive trade pact while those core economic grievances remain unresolved?

Karan Rao (3:22)

It just shows how modern geopolitics actually works in practice. It's aggressive compartmentalization. Both sides are prioritizing their absolute core national interests, like maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific to counter regional threats while just isolating their disagreements.

Ayesha Mehta (3:39)

So they're just pushing the visa stuff to the side.

Karan Rao (3:41)

Effectively, yes. The US desperately wants expanded market access and India wants energy diversification and protection for its domestic industries. They're basically saying, we disagree on immigration, but the global supply chain is too fragile right now to let that stop this deal.

Ayesha Mehta (3:57)

Moving to our next story. AAP minister criticized the center on Punjab drugs.

Karan Rao (4:02)

So what's the core conflict here?

Ayesha Mehta (4:04)

Okay. So this one comes from The Hindu. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Punjab, met directly with the families of drug victims, and essentially accused the Ahmaudmi party government of completely failing on its promises.
