So, the headline here is, seven accused sent to custody in Kolkata stampede. Right. According to NDTV, a local court in Kolkata has remanded seven individuals to ten days of police custody following a pretty devastating stampede at a Durga Puja Pandal.

This was in the Chorbhagan area.

It happened on Saturday evening, right?

Yeah, amid heavy rainfall and it resulted in 19 deaths. Police have formally registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

You know, the detail that is genuinely haunting here isn't just the sheer size of the crowd. It's the specific catalyst. I mean, it was a chaotic public address announcement that turned a crowded space into a fatal crush.

Exactly. The investigation is intensely focused on video footage from the scene right now. It shows an announcer repeatedly broadcasting warnings to people outside, basically urging them not to approach the Pandal because the bamboo structure was allegedly on the verge of collapsing.

He was also urging that the exit gates be opened. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari actually pointed out that an on-site police officer reported this specific announcement. It was made by a private security agency and accompanied by frantic whistle blowing. That is what initiated the panic.

You have people inside the Pandal rushing to escape a supposedly collapsing roof and then a massive queue outside continuing to push their way in to escape the torrential rain.

That physical pressure had no release valve. NDTV reports the underlying failure was purely infrastructural. There was no documented crowd management plan at all.

Right. The security personnel were vastly outnumbered, and both the entry gates and the approach road were fundamentally just too narrow to handle a sudden surge.

So accountability is now falling on the organizers.
