Hey, everybody, it is Friday, September 18th, National Cheeseburger Day, everybody. Seriously, apparently that's what today is. You're listening to the Mo News podcast, and I'm Moshe Oinounou.

Jill Wagner (0:12)

And I'm Jill Wagner. This is the place where we bring you just the facts.

Mosheh Oinounou (0:16)

And where we read all the news and read between the lines so you don't have to.

Jill, National Cheeseburger Day, celebrated by a lot of restaurants here in America. So, if you were thinking about indulging yourself on this Friday, Applebee's has a deal, Burger King has a deal, Buffalo Wild Wings has a deal, Dairy Queen, Denny's, Five Guys, Grubhub, McDonald's, Smash Burger, all the good ones offering a deal. And if you have a local place that serves a cheeseburger, you tell them that's National Cheeseburger Day, and you're expecting free fries or something.

Jill Wagner (0:50)

I don't eat many burgers, but when I do, they're cheeseburgers.

Mosheh Oinounou (0:55)

Jill, you got to celebrate today.

Jill Wagner (0:57)

Okay, now to the headlines, starting with politics and the countdown to the midterms, another sign Republicans could be in trouble, particularly with the Latino community.

Mosheh Oinounou (1:07)

A remarkable ad from a House Republican who's been supportive of Trump, what she had to say, where she shot the ad, and what it means this fall.

Jill Wagner (1:17)

To the ongoing concerns about AI and warnings about how it could threaten humanity, OpenAI has now disclosed six new incidents of what they call concerning AI behavior. And we told you about a Senate plan that would require AI companies build a kill switch in their models. Well, that plan, DOA.

Mosheh Oinounou (1:38)

Yeah, Congress not doing much. California, though, might do something individually as a state. The author of one of those kill switch bills, Senator Kennedy, known for his, he's a quote machine on Capitol Hill.

We'll tell you what he thinks the Senate can and cannot pass at this point. It's worth waiting for this sound bite.

Jill Wagner (1:57)

To the hunger crisis in Sudan, warnings that aid money is running out. The situation on the ground.

Mosheh Oinounou (2:03)

We'll take you inside the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Going back decades, 16 million people in need of aid, several million facing starvation.

Jill Wagner (2:13)

To the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, the holdout juror is breaking his silence. What he said about some of the other jurors.

Mosheh Oinounou (2:21)

As we expect to hear this weekend, not only for Patrick Clancy, Lindsay's ex-husband, but also his new wife.

Jill Wagner (2:27)

To the economy, airfares are going up and airlines are cutting cheaper flights as fuel costs spike. Why the industry admits it is likely not going to cut the cost of airfare even when fuel prices eventually fall. And a fascinating new look at how your birth order affects your future.

Mosheh Oinounou (2:45)

Take it from this first born son.

Jill Wagner (2:48)

And second born daughter.

Mosheh Oinounou (2:52)

Jill, we'll do an assessment of how we think this study stands up based on our personal experiences.

Jill Wagner (2:57)

And it's Friday, cheers to the freaking weekend. What we are watching, reading and eating this weekend.

Starting with politics, 46 days until the midterm elections. Some Republicans making a notable break from President Trump, trying to distance themselves from his message on key issues like immigration. Another sign of the GOP's difficult midterm election environment. House Republican, Representative Maria Alvarez Salazar standing in front of the White House, warning in a new video that some of Trump's immigration enforcement efforts have, quote, gone too far. She says in July, 50 percent of the 50,000 people that were detained had no criminal record.

SPEAKER_3 (3:40)

Be careful what your advisors are telling you about immigration policies. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.

Jill Wagner (3:48)

She said she's not talking about giving immigrants amnesty, but a, quote, dignified life in this promised land. Her district in the Miami area is heavily Latino, and her Democratic opponent, Elliott Rodriguez, has made immigration enforcement a major campaign issue. A new Rodriguez poll has him tied with Salazar at 45% of the projected vote. Salazar won her district by more than 20 points less than two years ago.

Mosheh, that is an incredible swing.

Mosheh Oinounou (4:19)

Yeah, you know, right now, we are, Tuesday will mark six weeks till the midterm elections. And so you might be seeing more of this happening as these Republicans are desperate to keep their seats. And so in some cases, in some places, they will throw the president under the bus, even as they've been supportive of him for a very long time. So it's hard to see it on immigration in these districts, right? These heavily Latino districts, or on issues like tariffs, which have raised costs, maybe on the Iran war potentially as well. You know, we've been watching the Michigan Senate race, which we'll discuss here in a second. Mike Rogers, the Republican there has been Trump friendly, but he's not inviting Trump to Michigan anytime soon, and has been trying to differentiate himself in a way from Donald Trump, even as a number of these candidates know that Trump has several hundred million dollars in his campaign funds, able to help these candidates win their seats for Senate or House. And so Salazar, she's had her differences with the president for a while, but the fact that we woke up on Thursday morning and saw a campaign ad, not from a Democrat, but from a Republican, going after Donald Trump, standing in front of the White House, just shows you how worried Republicans are by the numbers that they're seeing about potentially losing lots of seats in the House and Senate this fall. And in particular, in her district and other districts across the country, where there are large Hispanic populations, we're seeing his numbers drop from 2024 Remember, in 2024, Trump won 43 percent of the Hispanic vote. That was up from 35 percent in 2020 So nearly got to 50-50.
