Framed by his teammate and spent 31 years in the prison system as a consequence of that.

He's out on parole now, and here to tell you this wild, wild story. Dusty, thanks for coming to the show, brother.

Dusty Turner (2:42)

Brent, I appreciate you having me.

Brent Tucker (2:44)

Absolutely.

We've followed this story for a few years now. My last podcast, we covered the story, and that's what got me interested in it. And we, I feel like we didn't do enough for you, because you didn't get out soon enough. You should have never been there. But that's the story we're about to hear.

Dusty Turner (3:04)

Well, I appreciate that.

Brent Tucker (3:05)

Absolutely.

So to tell this story, we gotta tell the story of, obviously, how you got into the SEAL community first, or even the military. Tell me about where you grew up.

Dusty Turner (3:17)

Well, I grew up in Bloomington, Indiana. I got in the shadows of the Indiana University. I came from a long, military-oriented family.

My father, my stepfather, Vietnam veterans, and my older brother joined the Navy, and I kind of followed his footsteps right on in. But I joined, I actually joined at the age of 17, Delayed Entry Program, had my mother, had to sign a waiver coming in early.

Brent Tucker (3:49)

What did she think about that?

Dusty Turner (3:51)

What did she think about it? Yeah. I'm sure she had mixed feelings about it. She grew up around a lot of military men, and she was married to military men. And so I know that she had mixed feelings. Like I said, when she literally watches her husband return from Vietnam, and also suffered the issues that he suffered from, the PTSD and such.

So I'm sure she had mixed emotions about it, but she knew by that time, or before I joined, before I actually went to boot camp, she knew that I was dead set, and I was dead set at that time on becoming a SEAL.

Brent Tucker (4:35)

Nothing else was an option for you? It was Navy and a SEAL or nothing?

Dusty Turner (4:38)

Well, first, I didn't even know about the SEAL teams. At the age of 17-ish, I started learning about it, but I was actually, I wanted to come in the Navy to be a diver.

Brent Tucker (4:51)

Okay.

Dusty Turner (4:52)

And I'd been diving for some years prior, and so I kind of foresee myself, you know, getting into that. But before I actually got to boot camp, I'd heard about the SEAL teams. I met James Patches Watson, I think was his name, an old, you know, Vietnam era frog man. And he signed a copy of his book for me.

But anyway, I had learned more about it. Like I said, my brother was ahead of me in the Navy, and he started sending me materials all about the SEAL teams.

And at some point, I was just dead set. That's what I was going to do.
