Good morning, everyone.
Gerard Gibert (1:03)
And welcome to MidDays SuperTalk Mississippi. I'm your host, Gerard Gibert, along with Rhino in the Element Wealth Studio, guiding you through the middle of your day with facts, fodder, and fine music. Welcome back there, Rhino.
Rhino (1:18)
Howdy, howdy.
Gerard Gibert (1:19)
Well, how was it? A little week off, huh? It was great. No, you'd much rather immerse yourself in all this political and cultural news and all the other crazy stuff going on.
Rhino (1:32)
I was telling Caleb from the newsroom that I unplugged until 6 a.m. this morning. That's when I finally plugged back in.
Gerard Gibert (1:39)
That is impressive that you were able to do that. Well, I trust you're all refreshed, recharged, and ready to go.
Rhino (1:48)
Oh, yeah. I had all kinds of adventures on my days off because I haven't had that many days off in a row so voluntarily ever, maybe. Like, I remember getting let go of a job, and I had some days off that were longer than that. But, and I've been mom past, I think I was off for a little longer than that. But yeah, first time I've taken that many days off in a row. And because I was away from the rigor of having to be in this spot at a certain time every day, body clock got a little off, but managed to get that wrangled in over the weekend. But yeah, I mean, from playing cards in the carport of a house on the wrong side of town across the street from a burnt down house, to watching anime with construction workers working on the window of my apartment while they were on their lunch break and getting tamales from one of their lovely wives to getting to shoot some cool guns with a guy from Texas.
He had one, gosh, what was it, SR-25, some weird Russian gun that you pull the trigger once and it shoots twice. And got to play with a MAC-10, old school, oozy looking thing. Had all kinds of fun. And then the weekend, this past weekend, it's a great weekend for Mississippi State football, and US Soccer won their first match back after the World Cup. So yeah, good time away, good time off, good time decompressing, and I'm not going to lie, I was not looking forward to diving headfirst back into politics this morning.
Gerard Gibert (3:20)
Certainly understand. Sometimes you do just gotta get away from it a little bit. There's no doubt about that. Well, we held down the fort, as the saying goes, in your absence, did will and I, and had some lively discussions last week. Today, we're going to continue one of those discussions. We've got State Senator Bryce Wiggins. He is going to come on and share his response to a WLOX report on children in Mississippi Child Protection Services custody who are being housed in hotels. He'll share what changes he thinks are needed, and just to provide an overall update from his district. And we'll ask him what he thinks is on tap going into the 2027 legislative session as well. So, there we are. Don't look at your markets today. They're both in the red rather sharply, the Dow down 337 and the NASDAQ 253 The 10-year yields spiking today up to 5.263 percent. That's a rise of 10.3 basis points since it closed on Friday. So, that I think is a function of investors still not feeling great about the economic conditions in this country, primarily that this war is not looking like it's going to end anytime soon and get the flow of oil back to its pre-war level. That's keeping the price of gas and diesel, in particular, elevated. That is affecting inflation or certainly, there are concerns about it remaining sticky and persistent and in place for a while. And then, of course, you got the federal government who is addicted to spending, and they just don't see any break there, where the federal government starts to reduce the deficits that it is producing on tap for a $2.2 trillion deficit. That's mind-boggling. This year, according to my research, that would make fiscal year 2026 the third, to have the distinction of being the third largest deficit in the nation's history.
