Gerard Gibert (1:01)

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to MidDays SuperTalk Mississippi.

I'm here, host Gerard Gibert, along with Rhino in the Element Wealth Studio, guiding you through the middle of your day with facts, fodder, and fine music on this Friday, y'all. Whoo, man, it's a whirlwind week here. Glad to be back. Appreciate today filling in. What a bunch of stuff we got to talk about today. It's one of those days, Rhino, where three hours ain't enough. I know folks get tired of hearing us for three hours after that point. But so much going on. Of course, today, 9-11, year 25, man, hard to fathom, really is, year 25 since radical Islamic terrorists, is it okay if we call them that? Because that's what the hell they were, who seek to destroy this country, broke through all of our defenses, and managed to hijack some airplanes, blew a couple of those into the World Trade Center, brought both towers down, struck the Pentagon with one, and by the grace of God, some incredible American heroes, whom we will never forget, stopped another aircraft from reaching its destination to inflict massive harm and chaos and destruction.

Rhino (2:35)

Flight 93

Gerard Gibert (2:36)

Yeah, Flight 93 landed in a field in Pennsylvania. That field, of course, has been...

Rhino (2:42)

Shanksville?

Gerard Gibert (2:43)

I think that's right. It's been memorialized. I heard something interesting, and so we will never forget those individuals who knew they were going to die.

They knew it when they stormed the cockpit there and forced the plane down.

Rhino (3:00)

Well, they knew it was a possibility. They knew if they didn't do anything, they were going to die.

Gerard Gibert (3:04)

Correct.

Rhino (3:05)

And the plan was to retake control of the plane.

Gerard Gibert (3:08)

That was their objective.

And there's recordings of many who were back in those days using the old phones. And we have some audio of that that has been archived, where folks are trying to get in touch with their loved ones and saying, you know, I'm not sure what's going to happen here. I want to talk to you one last time.

Rhino (3:28)

Well, now 25 years later, we've got the actual cockpit voice recorder.

Gerard Gibert (3:33)

Okay.

Rhino (3:34)

And that is difficult to discern sometimes because it's not the highest quality audio, but what you can hear is harrowing.

Gerard Gibert (3:47)

Yeah.

Rhino (3:48)

Because they, you got to remember, this is before the reinforced cockpit doors.

Gerard Gibert (3:54)

That's right.

Rhino (3:55)

So on Flight 93, the group of passengers heroically used one of the stewardess carts to basically batter down the door. That and I believe a fire extinguisher and a coffee pot full of hot water and stuff like that. They used to attack the terrorist that was defending the cockpit door. And once they got into the cockpit, it became a physical struggle with the terrorists piloting the plane, who had strapped themselves in, hearing the commotion behind them.

And the passengers could not get them out of the seats and away from the controls. At the same time, the terrorists were basically having a discussion of, do we put it down now? And decided yes. So as the terrorists are pushing the nose of the plane down, the passengers are pulling it back up. And in the struggle, it wound up rolling over and nosediving into that Pennsylvania field.

Gerard Gibert (4:56)

Todd Beamer, of course, his words will never be forgotten. Let's roll.

And he was an American hero, no doubt about it. His spirit, I would say, is still alive today, is Todd Beamer's. And he faced incredible danger and risk to his own life to ensure that others survived, and that this hijacking would not succeed and reach its ultimate target. So what a story of him as an American hero. I did hear something this morning. I thought, Rhino, it was kind of interesting that there are many survivors of the Flight 93 crash that have never returned to the site, and many are this year. I heard that earlier.

Rhino (5:53)

There were no survivors of Flight 93

Gerard Gibert (5:55)

No, survive, families, I'm talking about, my part, those who survived, those who perished. Yeah, family members, pardon me.
