Good morning, everyone, and welcome to MidDays, SuperTalk Mississippi. I'm your host, Gerard Gibert, along with Rhino in the Element Wealth Studio, guiding you through the middle of your day with facts, fodder, and fine music. Morning there, Rhino.
**Rhino** (1:18)
Howdy, howdy.
**Gerard Gibert** (1:19)
Man, what a jam-packed weekend it was. First of all, with respect to sports, I don't even know if I can recount everything that went on this weekend. It's just busy.
First, the United States in the World Cup. Tell them how we did.
**Rhino** (1:36)
Yeah, I don't want to say I told you so, but I did mention Friday during the show that in an ideal world, the US would come out on top three or four to one, and they did come out on top four to one against Paraguay.
**Gerard Gibert** (1:49)
Yeah. I don't think we were necessarily shocked at that one though, were we? We were kind of favored to win.
**Rhino** (1:56)
Yes, we were favored to win. On paper, we should have won, like I said, Friday on paper, if you played the game, like if you were just rolling dice based on stats, it would have been about a two to one win. But yeah, the US performed, I wouldn't say flawlessly, there are still a few things they could clean up, a few things they could tweak, but they played better than I've ever seen the US men's national team play at the World Cup level, and the stats bear that out.
That's the first time they've won a World Cup match by three goals since the inaugural tournament back in 1930, and that is the first time the US has ever scored four goals in a World Cup match in the history of the tournament that's almost 100 years old now.
**Gerard Gibert** (2:46)
That's awesome.
Well, I like our chances. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the World Cup being held here on American soil is the reaction from those who have never been here before.
You've seen this incredible. They can't believe, like, how clean the place is. And I would submit that we wanted to be even cleaner, right? That we tend to focus on areas that need improvement. That's just our nature. But we often forget just how great this country is compared to the rest of the world for sure. But then, failed to notice.
**Rhino** (3:31)
Oh yeah, you got people from all over the world sharing their World Cup experience on social media. Probably the most famous one at this point is Freddy from Germany. He made his way through the Magnolia State last week along Highway 90 on the coast, but didn't stop in Mississippi on his way out to Texas for the Germany-Kuritzau match.
But you've had people like there was a video of this lady from Scotland who was just flabbergasted by the Olive Garden. You've had Japanese people talking about how Taco Bell is the best thing they've ever had. You've got a ton of them visiting Buc-E's and Costco and Walmart for the first time. If you tuned in to any of the Red Sox-Texas Rangers game last night, the Tartan Army from Scotland took over Fenway. And every time they would play a song for a walk up, of course the music stops when they get in the batter's box, but the music continued as the Tartan Army continued to sing the songs. So it was a great atmosphere at Fenway last night. It's been a great atmosphere at every World Cup venue so far.
And we're just getting started. We've only had two full days of matches. This is going to keep on going for the next couple weeks. And I am here for it.
**Gerard Gibert** (4:50)
Unbelievable. All right, so what about the Stanley Cup? It kind of got overshadowed, didn't it?
**Rhino** (4:56)
A lot of stuff has been going on in the realm of sports that, depending on what your sport of choice is, you missed a bunch, like the Stanley Cup, the NBA Finals, the UFC match. You've had golf. You've had...
**Gerard Gibert** (5:13)
That's true.
**Rhino** (5:14)
Formula One was in Barcelona. I've been paying attention to Formula One a lot recently. I didn't see a single second of that match. Lewis Hamilton got another win. Got a win for Ferrari. That's always fun for him.
