So go get yourself a root beer float, the vanilla ice cream with the root beer. Such an amazing concoction. Apparently, if you live near an A&W restaurant, you can get a free small root beer float this afternoon between 2 and 8 PM. So a heads up to all of you on this summer day. Before we get to the headlines here, sorry, a number of you had questions about over on our Instagram page yesterday. The headline was that a SpaceX rocket crashed into the moon yesterday. The upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket had been drifting off course for the past year. The impact happened early Wednesday morning. Apparently too faint to be seen with the naked eye, though it appears to have been visible by moon orbiters. NASA is studying what took place. The four ton rocket hit the moon at about 5,400 miles per hour, which is more than twice the speed of a bullet.
It created what they believe is a 90 foot crater on the moon. Now, this was not the intended outcome for the rocket. The way SpaceX rockets work is they work in two parts. There's a reusable rocket that returns to Earth. Then the upper stage rocket normally burns up in Earth's atmosphere. But this rocket actually sent two private landers to the moon. And this part of the rocket didn't have fuel to get back to burn up in the atmosphere. So instead, gravity and space took its course and it crashed into the moon yesterday. Now, the upside here for NASA is they plan to use this as an opportunity to learn more about the moon, especially as we plan to head back there. And for those of you asking about things crashing into the moon, fun fact, something the size of this rocket crashes into the moon about once a week. Now, typically, it is small meteorites, because the thing is the moon doesn't have much of an atmosphere. So we are lucky here on Earth, we have an atmosphere. So a lot of things flying through space that make their way to Earth burn up in the atmosphere. No such thing on the moon, which is why it's very cratered, as effectively something the size of this rocket has been crashing into the moon once a week for a very, very long time. So it's a good research opportunity again, and a good note to the astronauts who might be landing on the moon. Keep your head on a swivel.
All right, let's get to our main headlines today. We're going to start with the aftermath of the Michigan Senate Democratic primary, where progressive Abdul El-Sayed was officially named the victor yesterday. It was a very narrow victory, less than one percentage point. Now his campaign has the challenge of trying to bring together his party as they head in to the general election this fall. Then we'll head to the Clancy trial. Many of you have been watching this. This is the trial of a Massachusetts mother who has admitted to killing her three young children. But her defense argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. We'll explain what that condition is and how it could impact the case. Then we'll have an update for you on the two Republican members of Congress facing scandals right now. The party leadership is not calling on them to resign. But one of the members of Congress says, well, they're dropping the reelection bid. We'll tell you who.
