Today is Friday, July 10th. We're talking about Iran's possible plan to try to assassinate President Trump as tensions ramp up in the Middle East. Also growing outrage over the latest shooting at the hands of an ICE agent and ways to stay safe from a parasite outbreak that seems to be multiplying. Both the US and Iran are intensifying their attacks. Yesterday, the US military said it had struck more than 170 targets in Iran over just 48 hours. The US says it focused on military targets. But Iranian officials say the US also struck a stretch of railway connecting the capital of Tehran to a city in northeastern Iran where fallen Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried early this morning. In response, Iran says it fired at American targets in Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. There have been no immediate reports of damage, but Jordan says it also intercepted Iranian missiles. And both the Americans and Iranians are threatening to expand attacks even further. Of course, it wasn't long ago that President Trump was hailing a new deal to open the Strait of Hormuz and wind down the war. Now, he says, that's over. And Israel reportedly shared intelligence with the US that Iran devised a plan to assassinate Trump. The US has not vetted intelligence of that specific plan yet. And CNN says some American officials suggested Israel could be trying to sway Trump's decision-making. But other reports say the US has also picked up intelligence in recent weeks about possible assassination plans. And Trump himself commented that he's, quote, number one on the kill list. So this could mark a clear escalation in the war. To be continued.
With just months until the midterms, President Trump has fired all remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission. It's the independent federal agency that helps local election officials by providing funding and security guidance, certifies voting equipment and more. The commission has just four Senate-confirmed members, split evenly between the two major political parties. The two Republicans had already left voluntarily earlier this year. Then Trump fired the two Democrats this week. This comes after a recent US. Supreme Court decision that gave the president more power to terminate members of independent agencies, and during Trump's push for more federal intervention in the voting process. Now some local election officials are raising concerns, especially since the Trump administration has already scaled back the US cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency that also helped support election security. With no commissioners currently in place, it could take months to fill the latest vacancies.
There's been growing pushback over the Mexican national who was killed by an ICE officer earlier this week. Remember, federal authorities say the man was in the US illegally, despite having lived in Houston for 35 years and was close to getting his residency.
They say he was not the original target of their operation, but that he tried to run over an ICE officer with his car, so the officer fired his gun in self-defense. But not everyone is believing that's what happened, and there are growing demands for an independent investigation. ICE officers were not wearing body cameras at the time, so many activists are asking the public for any new images or videos. More than 1,000 protesters recently turned up at the spot where he was killed chanting ICE out. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her government is now preparing legal measures, and not just in this case. Mexico plans to file criminal complaints in the US over all 17 Mexican nationals who have died in ICE custody or in ICE operations since President Trump returned to office. So far, no comment from the Trump administration about Mexico's plans, but it does say deaths in custody represent a small portion of the detained population. And when it comes to this week's deadly shooting, the Homeland Security Department is investigating.
Remember that parasite outbreak we told you about earlier this week? Well, since then, the number of reported cases has surged primarily in the Midwest, Mid-South and East Coast for now. Thousands of people have been dealing with a nasty stomach illness that's been confirmed as cyclosporiasis. People can become infected by eating or drinking food or even water that's contaminated. In the past, outbreaks have been linked to certain raw produce like bagged salad mixes and kits, fresh cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas and green onions. But so far, the source of this outbreak has not been identified. Now, many health experts are suggesting people use caution, even before a source is confirmed, especially for produce like raspberries, which has those little nooks and crannies that can be hard to clean. In fact, the best way to reduce your risk is to cook any raw produce since high enough heat kills the parasite. And thoroughly rinsing and scrubbing fruits and vegetables, if you are going to eat them raw, can at least lower but not eliminate the risk. With things like a head of lettuce and green onion, it's good to throw out the outer layers and to really separate leaves when rinsing them. To be clear, cyclosporiasis rarely causes serious complications and is not usually life-threatening. But if left untreated, the illness can last anywhere from a few days to more than a month, and miserable symptoms like severe diarrhea can come and go.
