Results from Wisconsin's closely watched Democratic primary for governor are in, and it turns out Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated socialist Francesca Hong. That means he'll be going up against Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, who's now one of the most conservative members of Congress and is endorsed by President Trump. This is a huge turnaround for Crowley. For one thing, it was just five weeks ago that he dropped out of the race, saying, quote, It's become clear that I will not be the Democratic nominee. He ended up rejoining the race 10 days later when two other prominent contenders also abruptly dropped out. But even then, it was thought to be a long shot since Crowley's own polling showed he was behind Hong by nearly 20 points. And now his victory could breathe some new life into the more moderate wing of the Democratic Party. Of course, Hong's loss does not mean Democratic voters are rejecting progressives altogether. In fact, progressive candidates won some big primaries elsewhere over the last couple of weeks, like Michigan and Minnesota. But there were a few things that made this race different, like Hong faced criticism over past positions and comments, like her call to cancel Thanksgiving and reduce police funding. And some analysts say culture war issues like that tend to alienate more traditional democratic voters, whereas progressives who have focused more on economic issues like Medicaid for all and taxing the rich have seen more success.
Plus, unlike other progressive candidates, Hong didn't have the backing of some of the nation's most prominent progressive leaders, like US. Senator Bernie Sanders. All that said, Crowley still only beat Hong by just a few thousand votes. So both wings of the Democratic Party are still very much in play as they now head into the general election.
New video is circulating, showing another tense encounter between an ICE agent and an American citizen. A Virginia woman says it started when she drove past agents making arrests earlier this week and shouted an insult out her window. She had a camera on her dashboard recording it all. It shows agents blocking her car, approaching her with guns drawn, and accusing her of trying to run them over. Though the footage she shared doesn't include her actually moving toward them.
She also shared cell phone video of an agent pointing the gun directly at her. Still, the Homeland Security Department defends its agents, saying they feared for their safety. But some lawmakers are now demanding the agents face consequences. Since last year, more than 20 people in their cars have been shot at by federal agents, some fatally. And this week, the New York Times reported about new evidence that apparently shows race and ethnicity may be playing a role in how agents decide who to stop. The Times reviewed body camera video, text messages, and other records that have come out of recent lawsuits. And it says the evidence includes instances of agents using racial slurs while appearing to focus their attention on Latino people and bypass white bystanders. The Homeland Security Department denies the profiling allegations, though, calling them disgusting, reckless, and categorically false. The department says what makes someone a target is their immigration status, not their skin color, race, or ethnicity. And it's now planning to spend up to $20 million on new tools to help support their ICE agents carrying out the immigration crackdown. Specifically, the money is set to go toward thousands of pairs of gloves that can deliver electric shocks. When a small button on the wrist of the gloves is pressed, they deliver an electric shock anytime they touch skin, inflicting pain similar to a taser that doesn't break the skin. ICE describes them as a distraction and de-escalation tool for someone who might be resisting. But civil rights groups are raising serious concerns. For example, the ACLU says the gloves could make it easier for ICE agents to use force without being seen because the shocks can be delivered without leaving a mark. Still, the Homeland Security Department is moving forward with this plan.
