Another confrontation between an ICE officer and a man from Venezuela ended with a shooting. And right away, it sparked protests and calls for answers. This latest shooting happened during a traffic stop in Austin, Texas. An immigration lawyer says a 28-year-old Venezuelan national was making door-dash delivery when he was pulled over. There have been reports of a foot chase, and at some point, the ICE officer opened fire and the man was shot inside his car.
As of this morning, it's not clear if he was actually the target of an immigration operation or exactly what happened that led to the shooting. The lawyer says she believes the man has no criminal history, though the Homeland Security Department says he did enter the country illegally. DHS also said the man is in stable condition and in federal custody pending deportation. By last night, hundreds of protesters had gathered near the scene of the shooting. Some of them shouted at police officers holding riot shields, but other than that, there are no reports of things getting out of control.
Now Austin's mayor and other city officials are calling on federal authorities to be open and truthful about the shooting. They also want local police to have a role in the investigation. To be continued.
President Trump is now saying the triumphal arch he has planned for the nation's capital will also be a military complex. This is the same arch that has previously been described as a tourist attraction and as a way to commemorate America's 250th birthday. Now Trump says it's needed for national security. He says the change comes at the strong request of the military to have the 250-foot arch house drones and snipers and store large amounts of sniper ammunition. The Pentagon says it has no information beyond Trump's statement. Remember the arch's plan near Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. But it has been met with some opposition. There are concerns it would interfere with other national symbols, block views, and even complicate landings for pilots at nearby airports. And veterans and historic preservationists are suing over these plans. Still, the administration is planning to start construction as soon as November.
The US and Denmark have reached a deal over Greenland. And no, Greenland is not becoming part of the United States, despite President Trump pushing for a full takeover in the past. But Trump says the new agreement does give the US permanent control over Greenland's security, so the US can expand its military presence there. A US. State Department official says the agreement also bans any non-NATO base or troop presence in Greenland, and it blocks Russia, China and other American adversaries from making certain sensitive investments on the island. Denmark and Greenland also made it clear the deal respects Denmark's territorial integrity and Greenlanders' right to self-determination.
But, there are still a lot of details we don't know, like how much the American military presence will grow, and exactly what authority the US will have over security, investment and other issues. The agreement is expected to be signed this week during the UN. General Assembly.
Ukraine has launched what's being called its biggest attack yet on the Russian capital. Russian officials say more than a thousand Ukrainian drones were shot down across the country yesterday, including about 450 headed toward Moscow. But it seems at least some made it through since the attack damaged a major oil refinery and hit residential buildings. It came on the final day of Russia's parliamentary elections. So Moscow's mayor accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the vote, but said the attack did not actually stop people from voting. The attack comes as both sides are continuing to take the fight deep into the other's territory, targeting energy and transportation infrastructure. In fact, while the drones were headed toward Moscow, Russian attacks also killed civilians in Ukraine over the weekend. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have made major gains in Yemen. The fighting has also spilled across the border into Saudi Arabia. Over the weekend, the Houthis fired a ballistic missile toward the Saudi capital of Riyadh. The Houthis have also attacked Saudi-linked ships and oil facilities inside the kingdom. That's the big concern for the rest of the world. The Houthis control part of Yemen's Red Sea coast near a key shipping route that carries a significant share of global trade. Some more fighting there could mean more disruptions to shipping and potentially higher oil prices.
