We kick things off with a stark warning out of the Strait of Hormuz, where container shipping is facing an escalating and deadly threat. Maritime authorities reported at least 10 vessels attacked in or near the critical choke point since Sunday, with six incidents on Sunday alone, the highest one-day total since the U.S.-Iran War began in February. The attacks last week included the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride. The ship was hit by an unknown projectile on Tuesday, caught fire and sank with containers still aboard.
All 21 crew members were evacuated safely.
A second Singapore-flagged container ship, the GFS Giselle, was also struck by projectiles, but was able to reach safe anchorage. Analysts are warning that the downstream effect can resonate far beyond the region. The violence is beginning to constrain traffic. Analysts counted 131 crossings through the strait during the second week in October. That is down from 176 the previous week.
Meanwhile, federal and state authorities have exposed how criminal organizations are weaponizing legitimate trucking operations. Florida Attorney General James Uthmire announced last week that Operation Icebreaker uncovered a trafficking network spanning three South Florida counties.
25 people were charged in connection with the operation. More than 40 kilograms of cocaine traveled from California to Florida aboard a commercial truck without the carrier's knowledge. According to investigators, traffickers concealed multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine aboard commercial trucks, relying on legitimate carriers that authorities described as unaware of the illegal cargo. Investigators intercepted the shipment as suspects began unpacking a pallet containing the drugs. Authorities identified Ariel Fernandez Alonso as a major supplier, who reportedly claimed she was receiving 50 to 60 kilograms every 15 days. Finally, a California trucking company owner is facing decades behind bars after pleading guilty to a massive identity theft scheme. Hasan Korkmaz operated San Diego Logistics Group in Santee, California. Federal prosecutors detailed how he processed fraudulent credit card transactions through several businesses, including his trucking operation, in a credit card bust out scheme that caused more than $2 million in losses across two banks. Hasan Korkmaz obtained names, birthdates, social security numbers, and other identifying information to open numerous fraudulent credit card accounts under stolen identities. He admitted to all 18 counts involving bank fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft on October 15th. Prosecutors traced proceeds into financial accounts he controlled in Turkey. Hasan Korkmaz will be sentenced January 8th, 2027
