Treasury Department has fined Bank of America just over $1.2 billion.

The Treasury announced the fine in a Tuesday press release. Abdul Rahman Al-Fozan is believed to have been trying to record confidential discussions about OpenAI's artificial intelligence technology. Al-Fozan was also named a venture partner at Rad Ventures, a Riyadh-based investment firm focused on startups in the Middle East and North Africa, though no direct ties to the Saudi regime have been made. Prosecutors allege Al-Fozan concealed an encrypted recording device behind a television in an executive conference room, and investigators later found a second device in a bag linked to him. OpenAI said it found no evidence that he improperly accessed or stole its AI models, source code or customer data. Authorities have not publicly established a motive or identified an intended recipient for the recordings.

The Labor Department released the latest inflation data today showing that price increases accelerated through September. The latest numbers in the Consumer Price Index show that on average, prices increased by 0.6% last month, which was faster than the previous month's 0.4% jump. In large part, inflation was driven by a 9.1% jump in gas prices in September. Stock prices dipped after the new numbers were released. And according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, the odds of the Fed hiking interest rates at its next meeting at the end of the month roughly doubled from 22% to 42%.

Social Security recipients are getting their biggest benefits bump in four years. On Wednesday, the Social Security Administration announced a nearly 4% increase on payments as part of a cost of living adjustment to keep pace with inflation. The adjustment, which boosts the average Social Security check by $75 per month, comes as the program's trust fund is projected to go insolvent in less than six years, triggering an automatic 20% benefits cut for all recipients, unless Congress intervenes. Still, senior advocates say it isn't enough, but the head of the Senior Citizens League arguing seniors are getting a slightly bigger check to pay bills that have gotten even bigger.
