The Nobel Prize goes to US and German scientists for work on the brain. The Trump of the tropics family shocks the left in major elections, and the US military removes bombers from a UK airbase following security concerns. I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley. It's Monday, October 5th, and this is Evening Wire.

The Supreme Court opened its new term today. Daily Wire contributor Tim Pierce previews some of the key cases to expect.

Colorado has two major cases pending in front of the Supreme Court, and one of those could potentially have nationwide consequences. Suncor Energy versus Boulder, Colorado will decide whether the state of Colorado can sue Suncor for climate damages under state tort law. A ruling in favor of Colorado would essentially allow the state to regulate oil companies for actions outside of its borders and remake the energy industry in the US. The other Colorado case is St. Mary Catholic Parish versus Roy, and that tests whether the state can withhold funds from private Catholic schools over their stances on homosexuality and transgenderism. The state says that schools must abide by the state's non-discrimination rules to receive the funds, while attorneys for St. Mary's say that singling out Catholic schools to not receive generally available education funds is a violation of religious freedom. Other big cases include Republican National Committee versus Me Familia Vota, which will decide whether Arizona can impose rules on voters on top of the National Voter Registration Act, such as requiring proof of US citizenship. And Illinois and Connecticut both have cases pending on their laws, restricting certain semi-automatic firearms and whether they violate the Second Amendment.

One American and two German scientists won a Nobel Prize on Monday for their work in optogenetics, or the use of light to control nerve cells in the brain. It's a relatively new field of study and was formally designated in 2006 The two-man German team of Peter Hegman and Georg Nagel published their research in 2003 about how algae could be used to generate electrical impulses in human cells. The American Carl Dysaroth showed the process at work in rat nerve cells in 2005 All three scientists will split an award of about $1.2 million.

Dysaroth described the moment when he received the call that he'd won.

John Bickley (2:33)

It caught you in the middle of the night. What actually were you doing when the call came?

Karl Deisseroth (2:37)

Well, I had actually, I tend to work late. And so I had been working on a paper and I had just gone in to lay down when the call came. So I was not yet asleep being a night owl.

And now I don't think I'll be able to sleep for quite a while.

Brazil is headed to a runoff. In Sunday's first round, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, narrowly edged incumbent president Lula da Silva 47 to 45 percent. Since neither topped 50 percent, they meet again on October 25th. The result defied pollsters who expected Lula to lead. And since most remaining votes went to right leaning candidates who are now out, Bolsonaro is the favorite. Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years over an alleged coup plot after disputing Lula's win in 2022 His family did well down the ballot too.

Jair's wife, Michelle, and son, Carlos, won Senate seats. And another son and Jair's brother won House seats. President Trump weighed in, praising Brazil for reporting results the same day and knocking how long some US cities take. The winds fit a regional shift with right leaning leaders recently rising in Honduras, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador.

Spain's socialist prime minister has called a snap election days after Spain's parliament rejected his sweeping housing package, which would have frozen rent and criminalized evicting quote vulnerable tenants amid nationwide protests over housing costs. Spain's socialist minority government hasn't passed a single budget since 2023 and corruption cases have piled up for the far left party. The center right People's Party leads recent polls and its leadership has signaled openness to forming a government with the conservative Vox party after the November election. A conservative victory in the snap election would topple the last left center government among the European Union's major countries.
