JD Vance, AI executives and the Chinese spy chief are at odds over further tech regulation. A new Charlie Kirk statue was vandalized, and President Trump weighs in on the Lindsay Clancy case. I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley. It's Monday, September 14th, and this is Evening Wire.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have stormed the Red Sea. Foreign affairs reporter Cassie Akiva has the latest.
SPEAKER_5 (2:01)
Iran-backed Houthi terrorists are rapidly expanding their foothold in Yemen, and are now within roughly 20 miles of a major US military base in Djibouti.
The Houthis have seized key territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast, putting them in a stronger position to threaten shipping to the Bab al-Mandab straits. Saudi Arabia has asked President Trump to join the fight, but Trump has declined and instead sent 100 US military advisors to provide intelligence. The escalation comes after a drone attack forced the shutdown of Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline, which has in recent months allowed the kingdom to bypass the Strait of Hormuz to export oil. Oil climbed up to $109 a barrel Monday in reaction to the fighting in the broader conflict.

Vice President JD Vance is pushing back on calls from top AI executives to slow the technology's development and increase government oversight. Vance called the push from tech CEOs to be regulated a bit of a Trojan horse. Anthropic CEO Dario Amadei, Open AI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind Chief Demis Hasabis and Elon Musk have all backed greater safeguards as concerns grow over AI's potential risks. President Trump also rejected calls for additional regulation today, saying the US already has the tools to hold AI companies accountable and arguing that excessive restrictions could allow China to gain an advantage. Meanwhile, bipartisan senators are discussing legislation that would require AI developers to take additional steps to prevent catastrophic risks.
John Bickley (3:29)
Speaking of AI in China, the Communist Party's spy chief has flagged AI as a major threat to their ability to govern. Chun Yixin, head of China's Ministry of State Security, said AI could be used to spread deep fakes and misinformation, enable cyber attacks, leak sensitive info, and give foreign intelligence agencies new tools for espionage. He also warned that AI is rapidly transforming warfare and could give an advantage to whichever country develops the technology fastest. The warning comes ahead of expected US-China discussions on AI safety.

First ministers from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland met to discuss the possibility of independence. Associate producer Garrett Van Teem has the story.
SPEAKER_6 (4:10)
Well, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales have periodically flirted with the idea. For the first time in modern history, the three countries all have first ministers in favor of independence. The three first ministers met in Cardiff today to draft a memorandum of understanding, which stated, quote, For people watching across these islands, for people watching around the world, there could be no clearer sign that Westminster's time is coming to an end. In a press conference after the meeting, John Swinney, party leader and first minister of Scotland resolved that Andy Burnham would be the, quote, last prime minister of the United Kingdom. The memorandum clarified that each country would seek their own separate paths to independence, theoretically in the form of national referendums. The UK government in London has historically challenged the legality of independence through popular vote, but has never truly faced the question as previous independence votes have failed. With Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all now aligned on the issue, Westminster's power may soon be put to the test.
