The Amazing Kate Casey.

Welcome back for another episode of Reality Life with Kate Casey. If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, there's a good chance that Martin Mull was in your living room, even before you knew his name. He was Colonel Mustard in Clue. He was Leon, Roseanne's boss on Roseanne. Principal Craft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Jean Parmesan, the Private Eye of Disguises on Arrested Development. Late in his career, he earned an Emmy nomination for Veep.

Then there's Mr. Mom. Martin plays Ron, the smooth, smarmy co-worker sniffing around Harry Gars' character while Michael Keaton is home with the kids. Ron stops by the house and Keaton, who clearly has no idea what he's doing, tries to prove he's a real man's man by bragging that he's rewiring the house. Ron asks if he's going 220 and Keaton fires back 220, 221, whatever it takes. It's one of the great movie bluffs of all time. And if you haven't seen it in a while, go find it on YouTube after this episode and you will thank me.

But here's what most people never knew. Before the sitcoms and the movies, Martin Mull was a musician with a live comedy act in the 70s and eight comedy records. Norman Lear plucked him from the stage for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, which led to Fernwood Tonight with his comedy soulmate, Fred Willard. The two of them were such a pair that whenever someone hired one, they'd ask, can you get the other? And underneath all of it, the thing Martin cared more than anything was about painting. He studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design, and he painted every single day of his life. He just wanted to sit in a room and make pictures, but the art world didn't fully see him until he was in his 60s. That's the story at the heart of Netflix's new documentary, Who Is Martin Mull. The project actually started with Bob Saget, who loved Martin and wanted the world to see his whole career. But when Bob died in 2022, the film stalled. And then Martin mentioned, while appearing on Steve Martin's documentary, and that's how my guest today got the call. He stepped in, sat down with Martin with no crew and no budget, and captured some of the most intimate footage in the film.
