Today is Tuesday, July 14th. We'll tell you what's changed now that the on-again-off-again war between the US and Iran seems to be officially on again. And another deadly ice shooting is causing more questions and backlash. Also, health officials have pointed to a possible source of that outbreak causing a stomach illness around the country. The US and Iran have effectively gone back to a state of full-on war. President Trump formally notified Congress that the conflict resumed, and that gave the Pentagon 60 days to use US forces without Congress actually declaring war. At this point, it's not clear if Congress will actually take that step. But either way, the Trump administration could do a lot in 60 days. Again, yesterday, the US launched strikes against Iran. And that came after military officials announced they had already struck more than 300 Iranian military targets in the last week. Also yesterday, President Trump declared the US will reimpose the naval blockade on ships going to and from Iran, including all Iranian ports, and that the US will take over the Strait of Hormuz and charge a 20% fee on all cargo shipped through the trade route. That comes despite the fact that his administration took the position that those kinds of fees violate international law when Iran threatened to charge them. Oil prices once again spiked in response. It's not clear how this conflict will end since at this point, diplomatic negotiations don't seem to be making any real progress. In fact, Trump is now downplaying the importance of his own ceasefire that the White House had once called a historic breakthrough that could lead to broader peace across the Middle East. But yesterday, the president said agreements like that don't mean much. He plans to address the nation later this week.
We now know who will replace US. Senator Lindsey Graham, who died unexpectedly over the weekend. His younger sister, Darlene Graham Nordone, was appointed to finish his Senate term, which ends in January. At an emotional news conference, she called it a privilege to get to finish her brother's work, framing it as something she could do for him when he had already done so much for her. The late Senator Graham took legal guardianship of his sister when he was 22 and she was 13, after both of their parents died. Graham Nordone will be sworn into her brother's seat this afternoon. It will make her the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate. Remember, Graham was also running for reelection this fall, so a special Republican primary will be held next month to determine who will replace him on the ballot.
Immigration crackdown is now facing fresh backlash since news broke of another deadly shooting at the hands of an ICE agent. This one happened yesterday in Maine, and ever since, crowds there have been gathered. In this instance, a 26-year-old man from Columbia was shot and killed when Homeland Security officials say he refused to pull over for ICE officers. They say the man was trying to flee and that the officer feared for public safety, so he fired his weapon.
As of this morning, the only video that's been shared shows what happened immediately after the shooting, but not what led up to it. Reports say none of the officers involved were wearing body cameras. At least one witness says the man was trying to hit an officer with his car, but others dispute that. The man who died has been identified as Yohan Sebastian Guerrero, who lived in Maine with his wife and young daughter. Both were there when it happened. An immigrant rights group says Guerrero was authorized to work in the US and had been attending immigration court proceedings. Lawmakers are now calling for a full and impartial investigation. This comes less than a week after another ICE agent shot and killed a Mexican immigrant during a traffic stop in Texas. And their prosecutors say the federal government is not sharing evidence with investigators, so they've issued subpoenas.
Speaking of which, just yesterday, the US. Justice Department turned over evidence to Minnesota prosecutors who are looking into the January deaths of Renée Good and Alex Preti, also shot by immigration officers. State investigators will now be using that evidence to decide whether or not to charge federal agents with crimes in connection to the killings. To be continued.
