On Sunday, German police shot and killed a Muslim man after he rammed a vehicle into Berlin's Pride Festival the day before. The attack, which also involved the man rampaging with a machete, left at least one person dead and 29 others injured.

The suspect's 21-year-old Abdul Balout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, had already been sentenced to a year in prison after he was arrested in Lebanon trying to join the Islamic State. Joining us now from Berlin is Hans-Jakob Schindler, Senior Director of the Counter Extremism Project and former Taliban Monitoring Team Coordinator for the UN Security Council. Hans, thank you so much for coming on.

So you're there in Berlin where this all went down. First, what has the mood been in the city during the course of these events?

**Hans-Jakob Schindler** (3:48)
Tense, of course.
The Pride March End Event was the biggest in a couple of years. Half a million people took part. It was beautiful weather. It was just a wonderful atmosphere. And at 10 o'clock in the evening, that atmosphere ended very abruptly. And my initial reaction was, oh my god, not again.
We had a range of vehicle attacks in Germany over the last couple of years, fairly consistently. The last one, really famous one, was in December 2024 at a Christmas market. But we also had a car driving into a demonstration last year. So vehicle attacks are notoriously hard to prevent in an open and free society.

Indeed. Now, obviously, the most glaring fact here is that the suspect was a known terror threat. He was only in prison for one year though. That's despite being busted trying to join ISIS.
