It's Monday, October 5th, 2026 I'm Brian Ibbott, really, and here are your music headlines for today. Metallica kicked off their Life Burns Faster residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas this weekend. The opening shows featured two different set lists, Built Around Master of Puppets and The Black Album, wrapped in immersive visuals that included a roller coaster sequence on the screen. Jack White and Matthew McConaughey were both in the crowd for opening weekend. James Hetfield summed it up simply, For modern technology and old guys playing loud music, this is pretty effing awesome. Slash announced his fifth solo album, Flying Blind, out February 26th, 2027 The 12-track record was recorded live at Studio Barbarossa in Florida, with producer Michael Elvis-Basquet. He's also lined up an extensive 2027 world tour, hitting South America, North America, and Europe. More tour dates are expected to roll out in the coming weeks. Turnstile made their Saturday Night Live debut this weekend, with Dakota Johnson hosting. The Baltimore hardcore band played a medley of Birds, and I Care, and Dull for the SNL crowd. It's a notable mainstream moment for a band that's spent years building its following from the punk and hardcore scene outward. Fans have been buzzing about the performance since it aired. Federal prosecutors are asking for close to four years in prison for Michael Mike Smith, the man who pleaded guilty to running an AI-assisted music streaming fraud scheme that pulled in roughly $8 million. Smith used AI-generated songs and bots to rack up fake streams and collect royalty payments under pretenses. It's being treated as the first major US case of its kind. Sentencing is expected to move forward in the coming weeks.
Saturday was the Power to the People Festival in Columbia, Maryland, headlined by Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello. The night closed with an all-star jam featuring Joan Baez, Dave Matthews, Nathaniel Rateliff and Dave Grohl running through This Land is Your Land and Power to the People. It was as much a protest song showcase as a concert. Attendees called it one of the more memorable lineups of the fall festival season.
Miranda Lambert released her new album, Crisco, on Friday, opening with Snakeskin Boots, a collaboration with Ella Langley. It's part of a packed country release week that also included new music from Winona, Gavin Adcock and Hardy. Lambert's album leans into familiar honky-tonk territory while still finding room for guest spots. Fans are already picking favorites off the track list.
And before we go, Kings of Leon teamed up with The Weather Channel and NASA for the lyric video to their new song Cold Blue Dawn off their upcoming album, Oh My Beloved. The video uses actual NASA satellite fudge of Earth to spell out the lyrics as they play. It's an odd pairing, rock band meets weather nerds, but it actually looks pretty stunning. Somewhere, a meteorologist is very proud.
And it's Monday, it's time for our top five, the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart number five, Dracula by Tame Impala and Jennie. Number four, Hate That I Made You Love Me by Ariana Grande. Number three, Been By Now by Morgan Wallen. Number two, Boston by Stella Lefty. And number one, Ella Langley's Choosin Texas, which is now roughly 25 weeks deep at number one, still extending the all-time record it set a couple weeks back. For Hammond Chamberlain working behind the scenes, this is Brian Ibbott saying thanks for listening. That's it for today. We'll catch you on the flip side.
Thanks for watching.
I kinda like that, actually.
