It's Friday, July 17th, 2026 I'm Brian Ibbott, and here are your music headlines for today. Singer Lorde called out Spotify's About the Song AI feature on Instagram Thursday. The tool, currently in beta, uses AI to try to determine what a song is about based on information gathered online. Lorde pointed out the inaccuracies of the information shown for her song Current Affairs, and also pointed out that reducing the meaning of a track down to an AI-generated definition limits free interpretation of music. Gracie Abrams released her third studio album, Daughter From Hell, and performed the track Minibar on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The album, which includes a song dedicated to her mother, will be the focus of her upcoming North American tour starting December 2nd in Denver. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey introduced the Great Divide Act, a bill capping resale ticket prices at 110% of face value and limiting service fees to 10%. The bill, supported by artist Noah Kahan, whose album The Great Divide inspired the name of the bill, aims to protect fans from inflated prices and deceptive resale practices. It will now move through the legislative process before becoming law.
Dave Kendall, creator and former host of MTV's 120 Minutes, passed away. Kendall, a British-born music journalist, championed alternative music on the show, providing a platform for emerging artists. He hosted the show from 1989 to 1992 and continued to work in the music industry, including as a correspondent for the Bangkok Post. No cause of death or age was cited, but it is believed that Kendall was in his 60s.
After the successes of Oppenheimer and Tenet, Ludwig Göransson has joined forces with Christopher Nolan for a third time, composing music for The Odyssey. Göransson used ancient Greek instruments like liers and aulos as well as scrap metals and gongs to create a unique and timeless sound. The score also features vocals, including the song written by James Blake, Travis Scott, Göransson, and Nolan. Wildfires in Canada have led to the postponement of shows by musicians, including Sebastian Bach, John Mellencamp, and The Black Keys due to hazardous air quality. Bach's Waukesha Show was canceled, The Black Keys replaced their Chicago Show with indoor performances, and Mellencamp's Clarkston Concert was canceled. Authorities expect air quality to improve by Monday.
And finally, William Shatner, ahead of his debut heavy metal album release, announced his live performance at Riot Fest in Chicago. Feeling that he needs to take advantage of his new rock god status, Shatner shared a tongue-in-cheek list of backstage demands, including a DeLorean, a bowl of sauerkraut and a billboard featuring him and a fan. Shatner's upcoming album will feature covers of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, along with original songs. And it's Friday. This week's new music highlights include the aforementioned Gracie Album's anticipated third album Daughter From Hell, Steve Lacy's self-produced third album Oh Yeah, and Carly Rae Jepsen's single After All from her upcoming double album Day and Night. Other notable releases include Bella Kay, Dexter and the Moon Rocks, Rick Ross, and Buju Banton.
