It's Monday, September 28th, 2026 I'm Brian Ibbott, and here are Music Headlines for today. Sunday night was the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, live from the Peacock Theatre in LA. Taylor Swift took home Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia, and also became the most awarded artist in VMA history. Madonna won Artist of the Year and gave her first VMA performance in 23 years. BTS won Song of the Year for Swim, Lisa took Best Pop for Dream, and Sienna Spiro won Best New Artist. Snoop Dogg hosted the show, which aired live on CBS.
Taylor Swift also surprised fans with a new song, Patient Zero, as part of an expanded edition of The Life of a Showgirl. It dropped without much warning just two days before she picked up more hardware at the VMAs. The track adds to an album that's already dominated the conversation since its release. Bands are still digging through the lyrics for clues about who or what inspired it.
New Found Glory is honoring Chad Gilbert with two special shows at Epcot's Eat to the Beat concert series Today and Tomorrow. The band had been booked for these dates before Gilbert died, and they said he'd been excited and actively planning to be on stage with them there. They canceled a separate festival appearance, but chose to keep the Epcot shows, saying every note they play there this week is for him. It's a fittingly personal way to close out a hard couple of weeks for the band. Slipknot's mystery countdown finally reaches its end today. Wembley Stadium itself has been teasing the Slipknot date tied to the same September 28th reveal, referencing the band's old track 515 with the phrase, If You're 555 Cryptic posters have shown up in at least 10 cities across the UK, US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, all pointing to today's announcement. All signs point to a massive 2027 stadium tour, though the band hasn't confirmed anything officially yet.
Riot Fest 2026 in Chicago turned into a muddy mess this weekend after heavy rain soaked the grounds and forced some acts to cancel or cut sets short. Despite the weather, 79-year-old Iggy Pop tore through his set and proved he's still got it, while Soul Glo and The Chats brought along high energy to the stages. Not everything landed, Slick Rick's set leaned on some rough AI-generated video backdrops that didn't go over well. Still, bands who stuck it out through the mud called it worth it. Kenny Chesney released his new album, Silver Sands Marina, on Friday, celebrating with a sold-out release party at Nashville's The Pinnacle. It's his latest full length and continues his run of beach-leaning country records. Fans packed the venue to hear the new songs performed live for the first time. Corey Kent also dropped a new album this week, Heartland Rock and Roll, led by the single Don't Stop Now. Kent says the song leans at his soul and R&B influences more than his past work. It's his third major label album and shows him stretching outside strict country lines. These records add to what's already a packed month of new country releases.
And finally, a Tesla driver in England got pulled over on the M25 after police say he was playing guitar at 60 miles an hour, with the interior cameras covered up and a weighted device rigged to the steering wheel to fake having his hands on it. Nobody was hurt, but he's now due in court for driving without due care and attention, and since he drives for a living, his licensing authority got a call too. Rock and roll, but maybe pull over first.
And it's Monday, let's look at our top five of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Number five, Dracula by Tame Impala and Jenny, or Hate That I Made You Love Me by Ariana Grande. At number three, Been By Now by Morgan Wallen, Boston by Stella Lefty is number two, and number one, you guessed it, Choosing Texas by Ella Langley.
