When philosophy, physics, and theology collide, the biggest questions come into focus. Today we're looking at something pretty ambitious—a five-step proof for God's existence based on Bernard Lonergan's metaphysics. Right, and this comes from Robert Spitzer's walk-through of Lonergan's book Insight. What's fascinating here is how Lonergan tried to bridge ancient and modern thought. He took Aristotelian concepts like potency, form, and act, and updated them to speak to relativity, quantum theory, and fields. So he's arguing that reality isn't just a human construction? Exactly. Building on that, step three goes deeper. A completely intelligible reality must be an unrestricted act of understanding. Spitzer actually calls this an unrestricted act of thinking, because abstract realities like logic, arithmetic, and causality can't be reduced to material objects alone. He really emphasizes that abstraction, doesn't he? Words, concepts, predicates—they live in a world beyond pure sensation. Right. A chimpanzee can learn signs tied to bananas, but human language transcends sensory links. That's why mind isn't a side issue for Spitzer—it's built into intelligibility itself. And he pushes back on the idea that understanding could just be added up from finite beings or machines. Even a supercomputer or AI system remains reducible to physical processes and doesn't truly understand in the full abstract sense.
So what about step four? There can only be one unrestricted act of understanding. If there were two, some difference would have to exist between them, and any difference introduces limitation. A second unrestricted reality would stop being unrestricted the moment it became distinct. And step five follows naturally—this single uncaused, unrestricted act of understanding is the creator of everything else.
Denying this leaves you with a caused reality that exists without a cause, which Spitzer calls a metaphysical impossibility.
