Today, we're looking at Kshama Sawant's independent socialist challenge to Representative Adam Smith in Washington state. The central question, whether change comes from inside the Democratic Party or from building independent working-class power.

And Sawant isn't holding back. She's calling Smith a war-mongering Democrat who's been in office for 29 years. She says his recent shift in tone on issues like Israel, the NDAA, and military policy isn't a real change of heart. It's just pressure from her campaign making him nervous.

Right. And she's going after his donor ties hard. She points to Aipac and corporations like Palantir and Lockheed Martin, arguing his votes on Iraq, Gaza funding and military spending reveal a consistent pattern.
Her message is blunt. His record is the problem, not the solution.

What's interesting is how Sawant frames her own political history.
She recalls running in 2013 on $15 an hour minimum wage, taxing rich corporations and renters' rights.
The corporate media mocked those ideas as utopian, but she won and helped make Seattle the first major city to pass a $15 minimum wage.

That movement-driven approach is key for her. She says the same strategy produced other wins, like the Amazon tax. The point isn't to sweet talk Democrats. It's to mobilize working class people into action.
Building on that point, she addresses the rise of DSA and recent left-wing wins in New York, Colorado and Michigan. She welcomes defeating entrenched Democrats, but argues both major parties remain the two most powerful parties of global capitalism, which limits what party loyalty can achieve. She draws a really sharp line here. For Sawant, elected office is just a vehicle for organizing, not the main goal. She criticizes socialists who endorse establishment Democrats like Kathy Hochul, saying they should be exposing politicians who defend the capitalist status quo.
And she roots this in history, arguing real change came through militant mass movements like the New Deal era and labor upheavals, not inside deals. Universal health care, rent control, ending war funding, these require confronting the billionaire class head on.
Her platform is explicit. End military aid to Israel, impose a permanent arms embargo, guarantee free health care, enact national rent control, and raise the minimum wage to at least $25, or even $30 in big cities.
