We kick things off with an ambitious expansion plan from Aurora Innovation, as the autonomous truck developer plans an aggressive path toward massive commercial scale. The company told analysts and investors last week that it plans to run more than 30,000 driverless trucks by 2030 Aurora is fully allocated to exit 2026 with 200 driverless trucks in operation, which CFO David Madde said would represent an $80 million revenue run rate. The company said the Aurora driver has logged more than 500,000 driverless miles since commercial launch. Most of the growth depends on a shift from Aurora owning the trucks to carriers taking ownership under a driver as a service model, where the carrier owns and operates the truck and pays Aurora 85 cents or more per mile for the driving technology.
Driverless trucks hauling for McLean, Werner and other customers are currently averaging an annualized rate of more than 225,000 miles per year, which the company said is more than double the utilization of a traditional truck. Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have charged a Nevada man in what they're calling a massive semi-truck investment fraud scheme. Christopher Lunsford, a Henderson, Nevada resident, faces six wire fraud counts and two money laundering charges after investigators claim hundreds of people bought truck leases expecting passive income from commercial trucking operations. The Department of Justice claims Lunsford and others solicited more than $105 million from December 2023 through May 2025, with participants typically investing between $25,000 and $40,000 for each vehicle, and expecting guaranteed weekly payouts ranging from approximately $1,000 to $1,250.
Investigators contend approximately $75 million from newer participants went toward earlier payouts, while more than $25 million funded personal enrichment, including real estate, sports cars, jewelry, and luxury purchases. A separate Securities and Exchange Commission civil action describes an even larger operation covering approximately 765 investors nationwide, and claims the businesses raised at least $127 million between May 2023 and May 2025
Each wire fraud count carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence upon conviction, while money laundering charges could bring up to 10 years apiece. Finally, a proposed Customs Law overhaul in Mexico is raising serious concerns about potential border delays and cargo seizures for cross-border freight. Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum submitted proposed amendments to Mexico's Customs Law to the Chamber of Deputies earlier this month, as part of the government's economic package for 2027 While the initiative aims to protect domestic manufacturers from imports that may be entering the country at artificially low values, the proposal would give Mexican Customs Authorities greater ability to initiate verification procedures when they determine that an importer has declared a value below the transaction value of identical or similar merchandise. The legislation would also remove an existing 50 percent under valuation threshold associated with precautionary seizure in certain circumstances. Mexican lawmaker Roberto Alboros Gleason posted on Facebook that more than 2,500 customs operations valued at about $89.6 million currently escape precautionary seizure because of the existing 50 percent threshold. The Finance and Public Credit Committee held a working session Tuesday with officials from Mexico's National Customs Agency, and La Jornada reported that lawmakers were expected to circulate the committee's draft opinion Wednesday and could vote on it next week.
