Hi, everyone. It is Monday, July 20th, and you're listening to the Monews podcast. I am Jill Wagner. This is the place where we bring you just the facts. We read all the news and read between the lines. So you don't have to.
Some great news to start the podcast. Mosheh and Alex had a healthy baby girl. Big sister Olivia is excited to meet her little sister. And Mosheh, of course, is going to take some time away from the news and the podcast for a bit. In the meantime, the team here at Mo News has got you covered on the Instagram account, on our sub stack. And of course, I will be holding things down here on the podcast. All right, now to the headlines. The US military has suffered its deadliest weekend in months. And it comes as Iran's new supreme leader is escalating his rhetoric against the United States. To the World Cup, Spain is back on top of the soccer world. A late extra time goal gave the team a second World Cup title, while Lionel Messi's legendary career ended in defeat. What we know about the Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce recall. The UK is set to get its seventh prime minister in a decade. Andy Burnham set to meet with King Charles today to form a government. A look at what to expect. In real estate news, forget downsizing. Why baby boomers are buying even bigger homes. And table of one, more people are taking themselves out to restaurants. And a surprising trend when it comes to how much they're spending.
All right, starting overseas, the US war with Iran continues to escalate. A US service member was killed Saturday in northern Iraq during what the military described as a controlled detonation tied to a downed Iranian attack drone. Another service member suffered minor injuries. And that announcement came just two days after two American troops were killed during an Iranian missile and drone attack on a US base in Jordan. And US. CENTCOM says the remains of a possible fourth US troop were discovered in Jordan. Now, that would bring the number of US service members killed since the war began to 17 or 18 if that fourth is confirmed. More than 400 American service members have also been injured since the conflict began in late February. Six army soldiers were killed during a March 1st attack in Kuwait. Another service member died of injuries that he had suffered during a March 1st attack in Saudi Arabia.
And six Air Force personnel died when a refueling jet crashed in western Iraq on March 12th. Meanwhile, the fighting is expanding. Over the weekend, the US and Iran continue to exchange strikes. Some of the US strikes targeting military sites and critical infrastructure like bridges and water facilities. President Trump also reimposed a US naval blockade on Iranian ports after Iran continued to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Now, if you remember, Trump formally notified Congress on July 10th that the US was again at war with Iran, giving his administration another 60-day clock to use the military in the region without congressional approval. Tehran, meanwhile, has stepped up attacks across the Gulf in recent days, including striking Saudi Arabia for the first time in nearly four months.
