This is Nye A, your voice for today's headlines. It's Wednesday, November 19th. Here is what we are covering. Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, is a figure of intrigue and controversy with his company at the forefront of state surveillance technology. Known for his eccentricity, Karp has been described as potentially the world's scariest CEO, rivaling tech giants like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Palantir's software, used by governments and corporations globally, has sparked debates over privacy and ethics. The company supports initiatives from military operations to immigration enforcement, raising concerns about its role in state surveillance. Karp, who has a complex personality shaped by his diverse background, is driven by fear and a desire to make the world safer for people like him. His political stance is hard to pin down. While he has criticized Trump, he also acknowledges the necessity of working with the government. Karp's leadership style is unconventional, likening Palantir to an artist's colony and engaging in debates with employees and journalists alike. Despite controversies, Palantir remains a key player in the tech industry, with Karp aiming for it to become as indispensable as IBM once was. His vision for Palantir is rooted in defending Western values, though critics argue these values have shifted. As Palantir continues to expand, Karp's influence and the ethical implications of his company's work remain subjects of intense scrutiny.
From Palantir's influence to SAP's digital sovereignty, tech ethics remains central. SAPSE has announced a collaboration with France's AI sector, partnering with Blue, Capgemini, and Mistral AI to advance Europe's digital sovereignty. This initiative, unveiled at the Summit on European Digital Sovereignty in Berlin, aims to develop secure AI-driven cloud solutions that protect data and intellectual property. SAP CEO Christian Klein emphasized the importance of innovation combined with digital sovereignty for Europe's competitiveness. Blue and Delos Cloud have formed a Franco-German alliance to enhance Europe's digital infrastructure resilience, focusing on crisis response and cybersecurity. Meanwhile, SAP and Capgemini are deepening their partnership to bolster cybersecurity and AI-driven enterprise transformation across Europe. Additionally, SAP and Mistral AI are expanding their collaboration to offer a sovereign AI stack, integrating Mistral's AI capabilities into SAP's cloud infrastructure. These efforts are part of SAP's broader strategy to invest in European digital sovereignty, deploying SAP cloud infrastructure across local data centers and committing over 20 billion euros to sovereign cloud and AI solutions. Turning to Cloudflare's outage from SAP's cybersecurity focus, digital resilience is key. On November 18, 2025, Cloudflare experienced a significant outage disrupting major platforms like OpenAI, Spotify and Canva. This incident follows recent outages from Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, highlighting a trend where internet disruptions seem more frequent, however, experts clarify that the frequency of outages hasn't increased. Rather, the impact has grown due to the consolidation of internet services. Many websites rely on a few major providers like AWS, GCP and Cloudflare, making them vulnerable when issues arise. Angelique Medina from Cisco ThousandEyes explains that these providers act as the front door to the internet and any disruption can affect numerous sites. The digital economy's reliance on these few providers underscores the potential risks of such centralization. From internet centralization to Caltech's robotics, innovation continues to evolve. Caltech engineers have unveiled a humanoid robot capable of launching a shape-shifting drone, the M4, from its back. This innovative system, developed in collaboration with the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi, allows the drone to switch between driving and flying modes. The M4 can adapt its movement by transforming its wheels into rotors, enabling it to roll, fly, or even climb steep slopes. The humanoid robot, though slower, can navigate stairs and follow the drone's path. This project aims to integrate various robotic locomotion methods into a single system, enhancing safety and reliability. Aaron Ames, Director of Caltech's Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies, emphasizes the importance of trustworthy autonomous systems. After Caltech's shape-shifting drone, GetVocal tackles AI transparency in customer service. Paris-based AI startup GetVocal has secured $26 million in Series A funding, led by Creandum, with contributions from Alaya and Speed Invest. This brings their total funding to $30 million. GetVocal aims to tackle trust issues in conversational AI by developing transparent agents that facilitate hybrid human AI workforces for enterprise customer service. The platform, used by major brands like Vodafone and Glovo, boasts a 45% increase in self-service resolutions and a 31% reduction in live escalations. The funding will support product development and European expansion. Founded in 2023, GetVocal employs 60 people and operates in 23 markets, focusing on building AI systems that are transparent and compliant with European regulations.
