All right, you want to get lean, but you don't want to lose muscle. Of course not. We're going to talk about how you can cut the fat and keep the muscle. We're going to break it down. This works. Let's go.
Adam Schafer (2:25)
Maybe one of the hardest things to do.
Sal Di Stefano (2:27)
It is. It's very difficult to do. And the reason why it's difficult to do, besides the fact that people don't do what we're about to discuss, because the things that we're going to cover here greatly reduce the odds that you'll lose muscle. But the reason why your body wants to lose muscle when you're losing weight is because your body is trying to adapt to the new caloric intake. Okay, so when you're eating less, your body wants to learn how to adjust to that lower intake. It's no different than you making less money and trying to figure out how to fit your lifestyle with your new paycheck. And you have to cut expenses and stuff like that. So muscle is very adaptable. Your body can pare it down quite easily. If you've ever had a cast on or a sling on for a week, you know how fast you can lose muscle and how it can adapt in that direction.
And so your body will pare muscle down and kind of slow things down to meet the new metabolic, to match the metabolic demands with the caloric intake. And it's much more complex than that, but that's basically where it starts.
Adam Schafer (3:27)
It's also trying to adapt to the stimulus that you're doing also, which I feel like we get wrong many times in this. I can't tell you how many times I see somebody who decides they want to reduce body fat, go in a cut, and they ramp up intensity, activity, more cardio.
Doug Egge (3:44)
We'll get there for sure.
Adam Schafer (3:45)
So the body is also trying to adapt to the stimulus that you're doing.
What type of body is most conducive for this thing that you're going to do? So you pair that with your point of it's trying to adapt to the calories that you're giving to it, right? So it needs to get more efficient. Then it's also trying to adapt to what kind of stimulus are you doing?
