Welcome to Digimasters Shorts, we are your hosts, Adam Nagus and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm.
Google DeepMind, Meta and Isomorphic Labs are jointly investing $300 million in Biohub, the non-profit biomedical research organization founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The funding is part of a $1.8 billion initiative to build AI datasets that help researchers ask, predict and answer biological questions digitally. Biohub aims to develop a virtual cell that scientists can use to simulate biological processes and accelerate disease research. The US Department of Energy plans to invest more than $500 million over five years, while the National Institutes of Health will contribute datasets and research resources. Biohub says an accurate predictive model of biology could enable scientists to conduct experiments digitally and advance the next era of biomedical discovery.

Mumsnet has denied using artificial intelligence to write forum posts after a detailed prompt for an Am I Being Unreasonable response appeared on its message board. The prompt instructed an AI to deliver a clear ruling and practical advice while avoiding diagnoses, ableist language and pressure on sick children to perform socially. Users described the incident as creepy and demanded a transparent explanation from the long-established parenting forum.
Mumsnet initially said the prompt came from a tool designed to suggest thread titles using OpenAI technology. The company later suggested it may have transferred from the user's computer but users remained unconvinced. Founder Justine Roberts then confirmed that the prompt had come from Mumsnet system which sends draft posts to OpenAI for title suggestions. She said the system had produced a full reply in error and insisted that Mumsnet does not use AI to write threads or responses. Roberts said the site uses AI for coding, advertising, conversational analysis and flagging potentially problematic posts for moderators. The controversy comes as Mumsnet faces falling user numbers and increasing concern that AI-generated material could make online communities feel generic and less trustworthy.
Florida is emerging as a testing ground for a Republican backlash against the artificial intelligence industry, putting Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmaier at odds with President Donald Trump's pro-AI agenda. DeSantis spent his final year in office promoting an AI Bill of Rights focused on child safety, parental consent and transparency around chatbot interactions. The measure passed the state Senate but stalled in the House after lawmakers aligned with the Trump administration favored federal control over AI regulation. DeSantis has warned that unchecked AI could threaten jobs, spread narratives and undermine human society.
Uthmayer has taken the fight to court, suing OpenAI over alleged harms linked to chatGPT and seeking to block new models without independent safety reviews. His lawsuit cites cases involving suicide advice, dangerous drug combinations, violence and the Florida State University shooting. OpenAI has rejected the suggestion that chatGPT encouraged illegal or harmful activity in the shooting case. Political observers say DeSantis and Uthmayer are positioning themselves for a post-Trump Republican Party increasingly responsive to parents' concerns and populist opposition to technology companies. Their approach could give conservatives a distinct anti-AI platform if public fears grow and Trump's influence within the party declines.

HSBC is consulting on a major shake up of its UK wealth division as it seeks to reduce costs through artificial intelligence. The plans could affect hundreds of relationship managers and financial advisors across the country. The bank may halve management and specialist positions and cut up to 70% of its financial advisors. HSBC's UK wealth business holds 134 billion imbalances, divided roughly equally between private banking and premier banking.
Chief executive George L. Hedery has urged employees to support the bank's AI ambitions rather than resist them. HSBC ranks first in the UK and 11th globally on an index measuring banks' artificial intelligence capabilities.
The bank is working with Google Cloud on AI projects targeting up to $100 million in efficiency gains. It said the initial rollout would focus on personalized wealth management, financial crime prevention and enhanced client services. The proposed reductions come amid wider concern about AI-driven job losses across the financial services industry.
