I know what a lot of you are thinking. The genealogy. Are we really going there? We are, and there's a reason. If God had wanted a clean family tree for His Son, He had the power to arrange one. Instead He built this one, out of the overlooked and the outsider and the people who were wronged.

Hey friends, I'm Rachael Groll and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.

Friends, welcome back to the Hearing Jesus podcast. I'm your host, Rachael Groll. Today, we are finishing up Luke chapter 3 If you're just joining us, we are in our fall Bible study series where we're doing Luke and Acts together. We're going in a very spirit-led way. Sometimes, we're getting through a dozen verses. Sometimes, we're getting through three verses. We're just trying to be sensitive to the fact that a lot of this is hard for us as modern readers to understand and we're going slow enough that you can really wrap your mind around what's being said. While I think there is a lot of value, of course, in reading the scripture like in a year or something like that, my favorite way to teach the scriptures is by slowing down and really suggesting and making sure we understand before we move on. That being said, we have spent most of this week in Luke 3 We are finishing up with the genealogy. I know what a lot of you are thinking. The genealogy. Are we really going to go there? We are and it's important for a number of reasons and I'm going to share with you why, especially when we're talking about the lineage of Jesus. I'm going to go ahead and read. I'm going to apologize ahead of time for my lack of understanding how to pronounce Hebrew names. I'm going to ask for forgiveness before we even start because I know I'm not going to get through all of these without butchering some of them. But then when I finish, we're going to go back and we're going to see what it shows us about the lineage of Jesus. Starting at verse 23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about 30 years of age, being the son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Mathot, the son of Levi, the son of Melchai, the son of Janai, the son of Joseph, the son of Matthias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahim, the son of Esli, the son of Nagi, the son of Math, the son of Matthias, the son of Simeon, the son of Josek, the son of Jodah, the son of Joannam, the son of Reisa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shelotel, the son of Neri, the son of Melchai, the son of Adi, the son of Kosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Ur, the son of Joshua, the son of Eleazar, the son of Joram, the son of Mithat, the son of Levi, the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, the son of Malaya, the son of Menah, the son of Mithatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Seila, the son of Naishon, the son of Amidab, the son of Admin, the son of Arne, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, the son of Zarug, the son of Ruh, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, the son of Canaan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalel, the son of Canaan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. Let's pray. Father, I thank you for the way that these kinds of genealogies help us understand that you care about the details, the nuance, the insight, the history that's represented in these names. Lord, it's not lost on us. So I pray for our hearts that we would not be tempted to dip out. But instead, we would lean in to what you have for us today. It's your name we pray. Amen. So thanks for hanging with me. As I ran through all of those difficult names, I want to kind of just talk about the insight that we gain from this section. And I think it would be easy to just jump into Chapter 4 And I think even sometimes, as I've taught this, I have skipped over this part because there's just what feels like not a lot there. But when we start studying, we start to understand that there is a reason why we study genealogy.
