**Marques Brownlee** (0:56)
That's weird.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:57)
All right.

**Andrew Manganelli** (0:58)
Well, this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

**SPEAKER_2** (1:00)
I'm not a lawyer.

**Andrew Manganelli** (1:02)
I would not recommend doing this.

**Marques Brownlee** (1:05)
This isn't legal advice, but I wouldn't do this.

**Andrew Manganelli** (1:09)
I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I personally would not do this.

**Adam Mazzeri** (1:14)
New sound bite just dropped.

**Marques Brownlee** (1:19)
Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marques.

**Andrew Manganelli** (1:24)
I'm Andrew.

**Marques Brownlee** (1:25)
I'm David. This week, it feels like the calm before the storm of smartphone season. We have a bunch of different various topics that aren't too gigantic, but that's because we know it's around the corner. It's about to be mid-August and then September. So what do we got? Let's see. A couple of different health trackers, including thoughts on Garmin Circa, ads on BMWs, that's fun. A new Ford EV truck, that's hopefully more fun. EU making Apple add more cross-platform features. We can talk about that and a few other quick hits.
But first, did they even test this? I have one for YouTube.
So we all know that on YouTube, you can send each other videos, right? They recently implemented this very weird feature where if you use the share sheet and you send it to a friend, whether it's through Slack, through text, whatever, and they click that link, it is now a special tracking link that knows that the friend sent it to you. So then when you open the link, now you'll have the video, but below the video, instead of just seeing the comments or the description of the video, you'll see a little reply function, which has you reply directly to the person who sent it to you. Which is really, really dumb.

**Andrew Manganelli** (2:42)
Did we talk about this on the podcast? Because the other day I sent a video in Slack and it opened to DM with both of you guys because you opened it through Slack. But I thought both of you were DMing me and I just assumed it was because you were testing a new feature and I didn't realize it was because I sent the link.

**Marques Brownlee** (2:59)
Yeah, this is the other bad thing.
Yeah, it's very weird. We all know that YouTube is trying to make itself more of a social media platform. There are better ways to do this. I have suggested implementations such as a recommendation feed where your friends just hit recommend on videos and then it just shows all the videos your friends recommended. Dude, if Instagram's main feature is sending each other reels.

**Andrew Manganelli** (3:26)
Which is what they're trying to copy.

**Marques Brownlee** (3:27)
Which is, yeah. Sort of what they're trying to copy with this, but there should just be a feed of your friends recommended videos in YouTube.

**Andrew Manganelli** (3:36)
That's Adam pressing that.

**Marques Brownlee** (3:37)
Let me get around to the video that you're pressing.

**Adam Mazzeri** (3:38)
If that were the case, how would they make money? Answer me that. It would make a lot. Riddle me that. We don't watch only that.

**Marques Brownlee** (3:44)
It would keep you on the platform much longer.

**Adam Mazzeri** (3:46)
Not nearly as much as algorithmic slop, bro.

**Ellis Rovin** (3:48)
Well, it turns into algorithmic slop, but then you don't know where it goes.

**Marques Brownlee** (3:52)
The feature they shipped is way worse.

**Andrew Manganelli** (3:55)
This is really stupid.

**Marques Brownlee** (3:56)
It doesn't clear that they're just copying the feature where you send someone an Instagram reel, which just opens a DM between you. And now there's messages in YouTube. This is the thing that's new. My theory is they tested this, but only a little bit.
