Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists like us answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetics industry. This is episode 290 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is Perry Romanowski. Hi Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:27)

Hello Valerie, so good to see ya.

Valerie George (0:30)

Great to have another show recording four weeks in a row on today's show. We're gonna answer questions about, can you use a dryer sheet to tame the static in your hair?

Is it beneficial to use lip scrubs, or are they doing more harm than good? What is it with those Malibu C-Packet products? Can dry shampoo lead to hair loss? And fifth question, are tinted moisturizers formulated differently from foundations?

Perry Romanowski (0:55)

Wait a second, five questions? Whoa, it's like a bonus question.

Valerie George (0:58)

A mega packed show, yeah.

Perry Romanowski (1:00)

It is mega packed.

Valerie George (1:01)

So Perry, it's been a busy week for me. It's my first week, kind of up and at, I'm back in reality. And I did a talk for the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in California on hair color.

Perry Romanowski (1:12)

Oh really, and how did that go?

Valerie George (1:13)

It was a well attended meeting. Over 120 people came, and it was a good time. People laughed at some of my jokes, which is really good. But I know a lot of people missed the talk, and I just wanted to let everyone on The Beauty Brains know they're gonna get to hear it next month. If you wanna learn more about hair color science, it'll be pretty chemistry geared towards the science of hair, hair color and hair repair.

But Perry will also be hosting that talk with me. Right, Perry?

Perry Romanowski (1:43)

Right, I will. It's the IFSCC webinar. So that's the International Federation Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

Valerie is going international. And I'm gonna be the host there. I usually moderate these kinds of things, but I'm gonna certainly in the show notes, I will put up the registration form. So if you're interested, just click on there and it's free to register.

Valerie George (2:04)

Yeah, can't wait.

And then also, I think you're going on vacation, right? We're all over the place. Speaking of international.

Perry Romanowski (2:12)

I know I'm going to Mexico. It'll beat the, you know, you know what temperature it was here in Chicago yesterday?

Negative four degrees. No, negative four. Minus four F. Now that's Fahrenheit. And for our international listeners, that's negative 20 C. So all I know is cold.

Valerie George (2:32)

So needless to say, you're ready for warmer weather.

Perry Romanowski (2:35)

I am ready, especially after I was outside running and juggling in that cold. So yes, I am ready.

Valerie George (2:41)

So even though it's been that freezing, you still go out and juggle.

Perry Romanowski (2:46)

I do every day for the last 13 and a half years. I'm very, I have an uncommon stick-to-it-iveness.

Valerie George (2:55)

You know, you are definitely sticking to something and that's the ground because it's so cold.

Perry Romanowski (3:01)

It is. In fact, it's so cold that ice isn't even slippery. So, you know, it has to be warm enough for ice where you step on it, it melts it, it makes it liquid to make you slip.

But if it gets too cold, then ice isn't even slippery.

Valerie George (3:14)

Oh my gosh. Well, that's a benefit.

Perry Romanowski (3:16)

Yeah, but it'll be fun and we'll try to record an episode from the beach.

Valerie George (3:22)

Well, you'll be at the beach. You know what? I should be at the beach too. I'll go down to the beach and we'll record.

Perry Romanowski (3:27)

It'll be fun.

Valerie George (3:30)

You know, this week, Mr. Cosmetic Chemist, I feel like he's learning something. So he came up to me and he said, what is the difference between an exfoliant and an emollient?

Perry Romanowski (3:41)

Oh.

Valerie George (3:42)

I didn't even know he knew the words. Yeah, I was like, what? Where did you learn that?

But he didn't know what either of them meant. So you gotta start somewhere.

Perry Romanowski (3:51)

Hey, you know, I was talking to my niece today and we played this game called the joke game. Okay. And so I made up a joke about, well, it's sort of related to beauty, but okay, how's this?

How do you make your fingernails laugh?

Valerie George (4:08)

I don't know.

Perry Romanowski (4:09)

You touch their q-tickle. The q-tickle.
