Why Your Skin Isn’t Healing: The Gut, Hormone & Inflammation Connection
The Dr. Hyman Show
October 7, 2026
Early in my career, I noticed that patients’ skin often improved as we addressed their nutrition and gut health. That changed how I approached skin concerns and taught me to look beneath the surface for contributing factors.

You said that muscle building is one of the best ways it's a non-skincare intervention for healthier skin in midlife. Can you kind of unpack that?
Dr. Mamina Turegano (0:06)
There is a study that was really interesting. Women in their kind of midlife age range, they compared them doing aerobic exercise to strength training. The participants who were strength training actually had a thicker dermis. You know, so dermis is where our collagen sits. When you're strength training, you're increasing insulin sensitivity, and then that kind of takes a load off of your cells. You're decreasing inflammation as well. Your mitochondria are optimally functioning. When your cells in the dermis are affected by that, they're going to work better, they're going to build more collagen.

Aging shows up in two ways. There's the aging you can see, the lines around your eyes changing your skin, the face looking back at you in the mirror. And then there's the aging you can feel, the workout that takes a little more out of you, the hike that feels harder than it used to, less energy, slower recovery. That creeping sense that maybe this is what getting older means, or you just have to settle for less. I don't believe that we should, and that's why I use timelines powered by Mitopure, a unique form of urolithin A that supports cellular health and mitochondrial renewal. What I love about Timeline is that they use their science to address both sides of aging. Their topical serum is studied to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve hydration, while their daily Mitopure gummies are studied to support muscle strength and energy. Getting older is inevitable. Settling for less doesn't have to be.
Timeline enables us to support our bodies as we age from the inside out. For the first time, Timeline is giving my listeners access to their Prime Day Deal. 30% off a one-time purchase or 35% off when you subscribe and save. Start with your skin, start with supplements or try both. The choice is yours. Right now, they're all at Timeline's lowest price of the year. Go to timeline.com for Dr. Hyman. But don't wait. The special pricing ends October 11th. I've been a big believer in Infrared Saunas for a long time, but I really came to appreciate mine when I was dealing with mold exposure over 10 years ago. My Sunlighten sauna became part of my daily routine at that time, and I felt better every time I used it, so I never stopped. I'm still in it almost every day for circulation, recovery, and managing stress. A big part of that reason is simple. It just feels good. All I have to do is get in, sit down, and I'm supporting circulation, recovery, and my ability to manage stress. Now, Sunlighten's built on that with a new Amplify Red. More intense heat plus red and near infrared light working together, for cellular energy and recovery in one session. Sunlighten has been working with infrared technology for more than 25 years, and I like that they continue to find new ways to build on something that already works for me so well. If you've been curious, this is the moment. Go to sunlighten.com and use the code HYMAN to save up to $2,100 plus get free shipping and other exclusive savings throughout the holiday season.
Hey, everybody. I got some really exciting news. The Dr. Hyman Show is a finalist for two Signal Awards this year. Now, first nomination is for the best live podcast for my conversation with Halle Berry at Unimony, where we had an incredible discussion about menopause, women's health, and why we completely need to rethink how to support women through this stage of life. We're also nominated for my thought leadership for my conversation with doctors Michael O'Koon and Ray Dorsey about the alarming rise of Parkinson's disease and what the latest science is teaching us about the connection between the gut and the brain and environmental toxins and a whole bunch more. And I'm really proud of both these conversations. And now we need your help. Please help me.
Voting is open through October 15th. Just head to vote.signalaward.com and vote for the Dr. Hyman Show. And as always, thank you for listening, for watching, for sharing these conversations and being part of this community. We couldn't do it without you.
Mamina, welcome to the podcast.

Thank you so much for having me.

You know, I've never had a dermatologist on. I'm very excited about this because when I started practicing functional medicine 30 years ago and treating people's health issues, I would notice that their skin would get better by improving their nutrition, by optimizing their gut flora, by helping them get rid of toxins, by dealing with, you know, food sensitivities. And it was quite amazing to me how things that were really chronic, persistent conditions, like dermatitis issues, like eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, like a lot of the bread and butter stuff, just people have. It doesn't go away and it has to be managed. It has to be treated with medication. And, you know, traditional dermatology, at least the way I learned it, because I'm a family doctor, I learned dermatology, you know, on basic dermatology. I do basic stuff, was to put lotions, potions, gels, salves, creams, whatever you could put on the top to actually fix the problem, whether it was steroids or antibiotics or any fungals or whatever the thing was.
