Why "The Hero's Journey" Is The Solution To Your Marketing Problems
6 Figure Creative
October 15, 2019
Most audio engineers think of themselves as the hero who can solve all of a band’s problems. The “all-knowing mighty source of knowledge” to the lowly pleb musician. If that’s you, you’re doing it wrong.

This is the Six Figure Home Studio Podcast, Episode 101 You're listening to the Six Figure Home Studio Podcast. The number one resource for running a profitable home recording studio.
Welcome back to another episode of the 6 Figure Home Studio Podcast. I am your host. I think I burped in the pause there. I am your host.
Christopher J. Graham (0:28)
Leave it in. Do not edit that burp out.
Brian Hood (0:31)
It was like a weird throat burp. I am your host, Brian Hood, and I'm here with my bald, beautiful, amazing, purple-shirted, glasses-fore-eyed co-host.
Christopher J. Graham (0:43)
Keep it coming!
Brian Hood (0:44)
Fore-eyes is kind of an insult.
My co-host, Christopher J. Graham. Chris, how you doing today, my friend?
Christopher J. Graham (0:50)
I'm fantastic, sir. How are you?
Brian Hood (0:52)
Pretty good, man. We just wrapped up AAB this past week. Now we're determining all the prizes and accolades and finalizing scoring so we know who the winners of the gift cards are at the final this year. We have a playoff at the end.
Only three teams win gift cards.
Christopher J. Graham (1:06)
I'm a gear slut, so tell me, what was the gift card for?
Brian Hood (1:09)
It doesn't have to be for gear slut stuff. It's for Sweetwater. And if you're overseas, it's for your own local music store.
Christopher J. Graham (1:15)
Oh, interesting. Let me ask you a serious question, Brian.
Brian Hood (1:19)
Okay, what?
Christopher J. Graham (1:19)
I've been saving this question for some time.
Brian Hood (1:22)
Oh my God.
Christopher J. Graham (1:23)
A company comes to us. They could manufacture audio gear.
They could manufacture musical instruments. It's something kind of in our...
Brian Hood (1:30)
Take a hike.
That's what I'd say. I don't care what your offer is.
Christopher J. Graham (1:34)
Well, here's the question. What company, if they offered you free stuff, would you be unable to say no to?
Brian Hood (1:44)
Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single thing.
Christopher J. Graham (1:51)
Well, other than any headphone company, I'm going to answer the question for myself. Other than any high-end headphone company, just randomly, I'm going to go ahead and say, this is so weird, Martin Guitars.
Brian Hood (2:03)
Yeah, I know you have that. I was going to say weird obsession, but that's not a weird obsession. Those are good guitars.
Christopher J. Graham (2:07)
Oh my gosh, they're so good.
Brian Hood (2:08)
You're a whole background with singer songwriters, so I understand.
Christopher J. Graham (2:11)
Yeah, I would say yes to them.
Brian Hood (2:13)
It's just weird because I have everything that I want. I don't want anything else. It's a weird sort of, I don't want to say, it's just being content.
Christopher J. Graham (2:21)
That's amazing. And I think we should all strive for that. I'm going to tell a story. I haven't told this story before. This is the best single sales experience of my entire life. Speaking of Martin Guitars.
When I was in college, actually when I graduated...
Brian Hood (2:35)
Just for the record, you've told this story a few times in the podcast. I have?
Christopher J. Graham (2:38)
About Wildwoods Music?
Brian Hood (2:39)
Oh yeah, I'm all about hearing it again though. Let's hear a Chris Graham story.
Christopher J. Graham (2:42)
Okay, okay, sorry.
Brian Hood (2:43)
You know, there's people who just picked up the podcast in the last 10, 15 episodes. You want to tell it to them.
Christopher J. Graham (2:47)
So I graduated college. Some family members gave me some money, and I was a singer-songwriter, and I was like, I want to get a really nice acoustic guitar.
And I found this little, tiny shop that, much to my chagrin, I just found out has closed.
Brian Hood (3:03)
Really? They just closed?
Christopher J. Graham (3:04)
They just closed.
Brian Hood (3:05)
You've spoken highly of them for years now.
Christopher J. Graham (3:07)
Oh my gosh. It was a paradise. Freaking, like, Eric Clapton would, well, he lives not too far from the shop, but people would come from overseas to go to the shop. It's called Wildwoods Music. It was in Coshokton, Ohio, literally in the middle of nowhere.
Brian Hood (3:19)
It sounds like a nothing city.
Christopher J. Graham (3:21)
It is. And no offense, Coshokton, you're beautiful, though.
Brian Hood (3:25)
I'm Googling it.
Christopher J. Graham (3:26)
I went there to buy a Martin OM-21 guitar because they were the only people that stocked it anywhere near me.
Brian Hood (3:32)
If you're wondering what that noise was, that's the gear slut alert. We do that anytime.
