Why should you pee after having sex? Thanks for asking.
I don't know about your love life, but let's be honest, for most people, having sex doesn't work out as smoothly as what you see in the movies. Not only is the act itself idealized, but so is what comes after. On screen, you tend to see couples snuggling and drifting off in each other's arms all cosy and serene. But what movies tend to skip over is the part where you have to slip out of bed with your legs pressed together and waddle like a penguin to the bathroom to pee and wash up. Okay, it might feel like a bit of a mood killer, but it's actually very important for staying healthy.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:42)
Why is that, then?

It's all about preventing urinary tract infections, known as UTIs for short. If you've ever had one before, memories of that burning bladder sensation are probably enough to mean that going to the bathroom post sex is already second nature. But if you're lucky enough to have not yet had a UTI, consider yourself warned. Now, women and men can both get UTIs, but they're far more common in women. And that's mainly because women's genital and urinary tracts are close together. Plus, women have a much shorter urethra. Our bodies already host a lot of bacteria around the perineum area. And when we have sex, the movements and friction can push them up into the urethra and eventually the bladder. So there's really no one to blame when it happens. It's just one of those things. Even a finger or sex toy can sometimes trigger a UTI or yeast infection.
So how does peeing stop bacteria from reaching the bladder? You could say that our urine is like a natural flush. When you pee, it helps push out any bacteria that might be working their way towards the bladder.
But if you don't, they simply stay there and multiply, which can potentially lead to a UTI. And a quick pee is in fact much better than a vaginal shower. Douching messes with the vagina's ecosystem, disrupting the natural balance of flora. And that can lead to bigger problems like dryness, irritation, infections or yeast issues.
Do I really have to forget about post sex cuddling then? Not necessarily. To some extent, it depends on the person. If you're not especially prone to UTIs, there's no need to rush, but still it's best that you don't wait longer than a few minutes to go to pee. If on the other hand, you do frequently get UTIs, there are certain precautions you can take. Aside from peeing, you should also make sure you drink plenty of water or cranberry juice. That's right. According to WebMD, some studies have found that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry pills can prevent UTIs, especially in women who are at risk for these infections. But it's really not a guarantee. Luckily, nature often gives a helping hand. After arousal or orgasm, many women naturally feel the urge to pee.
