Fuel gauge malfunction. How to fix your body's broken traffic lights. Have you ever driven a car with a broken fuel gauge? You're never quite sure if you have a full tank or if you're running on fumes. Your body operates in the exact same way. Our organs depend on the right amount of nutrition, not too much, not too little, to perform their jobs. To manage this, we have built in nutrient sensors. Think of them like biological traffic lights that flash green when we need more fuel and red when we've had enough. But as we age, and particularly as we navigate the menopause transition or menalescence, as I like to call it, those traffic lights can get damaged. This is the fifth major time bomb of aging.
Deregulated Nutrient Sensing, or as I call it, fuel gauge malfunction. There are three main pathways that control your fuel gauge. Insulin signaling, mTOR, and AMPK. Insulin signaling manages your blood sugar. As estrogen declines through menalescence, insulin sensitivity also decreases, leading to increased visceral fat storage, you know, that fat that's smothering our organs, and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
mTOR controls how your cells grow and use amino acids. When mTOR is constantly elevating from eating too frequently or eating the wrong things, it stops your body from clearing out damaged cells. Finally, AMPK is your cellular energy sensor. When energy is low, AMPK tells your body to burn fat. But as we age, AMPK activity decreases, leading to poor glucose control and fat accumulation. Your gut microbiome acts like a digestive assistant. When you feed it the right fibers, it produces short-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids stimulate the release of hormones like GLP-1.
Yes, the same pathway targeted by drugs like Ozempic and Trizepatide, which signals fullness and promotes insulin release to manage blood sugar. Muscle is the master of metabolism. When you engage in strategic resistance training, you improve your insulin sensitivity and physically recalibrate the AMPK and mTOR pathways.
So, how do we build the shields for an unbreakable lifestyle? Well, first, unbreakable anti-inflammatory nutrition. Feed the gut microbiome with complex carbohydrates, fiber, and prebiotics. Prioritize high-quality protein to properly stimulate the mTOR pathway for muscle synthesis. And second, strategic load.
You've got to lift heavy.
Resistance training is non-negotiable for maintaining insulin sensitivity as we age. And third, hormone optimization. Estrogen has profound protective effects on insulin sensitivity. Working with a clinician to manage the hormonal shifts of the menopause transition is critical. Listen, you do not have to accept metabolic dysfunction as simply a normal part of aging. You do not have to drive around with a broken fuel gauge. By fueling your gut microbiome, building your skeletal muscle, optimizing your hormones, you can repair your biological traffic lights. Longevity is not passive. It is built by design.
